I'm Jim, a knowledgeable and caring tutor who is dedicated to not only helping math and science students thrive in their current courses, but to adopting sustainable learning processes for addressing more advanced coursework. Sustainable learning processes for math and science courses will help the student in future high school or collegiate coursework, perhaps even influencing one's career interests and direction.

I've always been gifted in math and sciences since childhood, having taken calculus as a high school sophomore and advanced chemistry as a junior. I was Class Valedictorian upon graduating from a large public high school in Maryland. After earning several collegiate scholarships, I pursued a Chemical Engineering curriculum at the University of Maryland at College Park, where I graduated first in my chemical engineering class and in the top 1% out of all engineers (~10,000 students). My chemical engineering curriculum required me to take a great deal of math, physics, and chemistry courses as prerequisites.

I continued utilizing my applied math and science principles in a big way throughout my professional career first as a chemical and environmental engineer, followed by 15 years as a leading Federal Government Business Development professional with major companies like Foster Wheeler and DuPont. Although not a "professional" tutor, I've validated my tutoring processes by helping my own children as they've achieved rising levels of academic success. I absolutely love tutoring and am particularly pleased when I see that proverbial "lightbulb" go off in a student's mind as he or she gains a working understanding of a new concept!

I believe effective tutoring must be open and collaborative with the student, as well as the student's parents, as appropriate. I communicate well with people and will provide my clients with honest and open dialogue. I'm committed to being responsive to my client's needs and immediate priorities. Please contact me with any questions and to schedule a lesson!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I teach Algebra 1 principles with an eye towards Algebra 2, so that the student gets exposed to some of the more complicated problems he or she will be seeing later in higher-level math courses. We will address not only problem areas, but will address the source of confusion through a brief review of fundamentals.

Chemistry

Chemistry - I completed Inorganic, Organic, AP Chemistry, and Advanced Physical Chemistry throughout my high school/collegiate career, all with straight-A's and a passion for the subjects. Mathematics - I completed algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, 3-dimensional calculus, differential equations, matrices, and other advanced math courses throughout college, all with straight-A's and a love and passion for understanding and applying these principles to real-life problems and scenarios.

Very knowledgeable and helpful.

I met with Mr. D. for help with Algebra 2 and Chemistry. He is VERY knowledgeable about both subjects! He gave real life scenarios where math and chemistry are used which was helpful to me. Also, he started out with the very basics so I could get a good handle on what I was doing in my classes. I highly recommend him!
