Bio

My day job is being a lawyer who does research and writing at the federal court level. But my passion is teaching ESL. I am also certified in TESL/TESOL and business English. I have volunteered with Loudoun Literacy Council as an ESL teacher for a few years, and I just finished teaching my fourth class of adult learners (20 students). My day job is being a lawyer who does research and writing at the federal court level. But my passion is teaching ESL. I am also certified in TESL/TESOL and business English. I have volunteered with Loudoun Literacy Council as an ESL teacher for a few years, and I just finished teaching my fourth class of adult learners (20 students). Most of my students have stayed with me for at least three classes. I have also taught English in the workplace through Loudoun Literacy Council. For all of my classes, I completely design the curriculum.

I have not taught through Wyzant's platform for awhile, but I am ready to start again. My teaching philosophy is: mix it up, keep it interesting, adapt to what your student needs, and always make it fun. Smiles and humor are part of every class. We focus on all aspects of language - reading, writing, speaking, and listening/comprehension, as well as pronunciation/accent reduction. I employ engaging activities, games, quizzes, role plays, etc. My curriculum is specifically targeted to the students I am teaching - we focus on the areas on which they want (or need) to focus.

Enthusiastic, intelligent, flexible tutor

Deb is awesome. She is an enthusiastic, intelligent, friendly english tutor. Deb is punctual and respectful. She is flexible, tailoring her lessons to an individual’s needs. She has done an excellent job in improving my conversational english. She sets a clear outline for each lesson. Deb makes each lesson fun. She is great at expanding my vocabularies, expressions and idioms and she makes interesting stories about the new words so that it is easy to remember them. I highly recommend her.
