I am currently a college professor of English, with expertise in teaching literature, writing, reading, study skills, and other liberal arts subjects.
I graduated from Williams College with a degree in English with honors and followed that passion to Sarah Lawrence College, where I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Writing. As a professor, I have experience teaching basic English skills, as well as advanced critical reading and writing techniques. My teaching and tutoring philosophy is based on encouraging students to explore their own voices while learning the fundamentals.
My students are challenged as well as supported; we work as a team to approach assignments with a can-do attitude. I have experience partnering with ADD/ADHD and ESL students.
Focus on time management and study skills are also incorporated into each tutoring lesson. Knowing that no student is the same, I do not use prefabricated lesson plans. Each lesson is designed for your student, and your student alone.

If the student is a no-show or cancels with less than an hour notice, a cancellation fee is in effect. The fee is 1/2 the hourly rate.
Our son, a junior who attends an area prep school, has received invaluable help from Ms. E. He has a demanding and challenging curriculum, yet Lauren has immensely helped our 11th grader (the most important year in high school if one seeks to further their education). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study skills is an integral part of each subject I tutor. Knowing the fundamentals of a subject only gets you so far; students need a tool kit to build on their foundation of knowledge. The tool kit includes organization skills, time management skills, and study skills. As a tutor, I actually provide a "tool kit," filled with a day calendar, a binder, dividers, post-it notes, and colored pens.
I was a swim coach for 6 years in high school and college, as well as a lifeguard. I swam on my college's varsity swim team, and was an Academic All-American, meaning I held higher than a 3.3 GPA while actively competing on the swim team. I was also a three-time NCAA Division III champion.
