Teaching beginning and struggling readers has been my passion for over 20 years! I have a Master's Degree in Reading from the University of Virginia where I graduated with honors. There I took the Word Study class where I learned about how to use children's spelling errors to inform instruction. I am also certified in Phono-Graphix (the Foolproof Way to Teach Your Child to Read). I have been tutoring children for many years. Most recently I was the Reading Specialist at Chesterbrook Academy where I used the Wilson Reading program and specialized in teaching reading, spelling and writing. The Wilson Reading System is phonics-based and gives children ample practice reading decodable words, sentences and stories.. I utilize instruction that follows the Science Of Reading (SOR) including phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency and comprehension.. My students learn how to read fluently and with confidence. In January 2022, I successfully competed all nine Reading 101 Modules on the Reading Rockets website. I have been a tutor on Wyzant's platform for eight years. I love working with young children!

I have a master's degree in Flute Performance from Boston University where I studied with Doriot Anthony Dwyer, then Principal Flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I currently teach flute lessons at Minton's Music Academy in Ashburn, Virginia. I have taught flute lessons for over twenty years. I find it is important to work on tone, breathing, technique, and musicality as well as other aspects of playing. I tailor my teaching to meet the needs of the individual student. I love the energy that emanates between me and my flute students!

Excellent Tutor for Dyslexia

Margaret has been working with our son for almost a year now. He is severely dyslexic and she has been the one person who has not only really connected with him but also he has told me Margaret is the one who is going to teach me to read. I would highly recommend Margaret. She has accommodated us when our scheduled has shifted, connected with his teachers, and worked at meeting him where he is at.

Highly recommended tutor for emergent or struggling readers

Our family had a wonderful tutoring experience with Margaret K. She tutored both of my first graders who needed additional help with phonics blends (putting together the individual letter sounds). Margaret is an expert in Wilson’s Fundations and since my children had learned that methodology in school, it was important to me to continue with that approach. She quickly diagnosed the different weaknesses of my children and created different lesson plans for each one. Margaret was thoroughly prepared for each session and very methodical in her approach. She does an excellent job of maintaining the children’s focus and attention during the session. Margaret also provided little assignments for the children to complete outside the sessions in order to review the skills she had taught them; those assignments were extremely helpful in building retention and making each subsequent session more productive. My children advanced their ability to sound out words and became more confident and fluent in their reading as a result of Margaret’s work with them. Their spelling also improved as they could more effectively identify the component sounds of each word. I highly recommend Margaret for emergent or struggling readers.

Knowledgeable and effective tutor

Margaret is a wonderful tutor! My daughter is dyslexic and had reading trouble. She was really confused with spelling words. Margaret worked with her, and in no time, my daughter began spelling much better. My daughter finally stopped asking me to help her spell every little word. Spelling correlates with fluent reading. Margaret is excellent at teaching students how to use sounds. She is a very effective tutor, and you will see results!

Professional and insightful tutor

Margaret provides careful instruction focused on exactly where the students are at and gives good value of time. Focusing on maximizing the time with the student and encouraging them to get the most they can out of their time with her.

Knowledgeable about dyslexia

My daughter has dyslexia, and it has been hard to find tutors with relevant experience and knowledge. I have high hopes for my daughter finally receiving the help that she needs!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

My son enjoyed his first online lesson with Margo. We look forward to working more with her. She is knowledgeable in dyslexia and that is key. I believe she will help my son progress in reading.
