About Joey

I am a former High School science teacher (Biology, Chemistry and Human Anatomy) and have been tutoring/mentoring students since I was 14 when I helped a former teacher of mine at Lynnbrook Elementary. I have since tutored and mentored students of all ages from 7-21 in many different fields. I was a tutor for college level biochemistry and organic chemistry. My SAT and PSAT scores allowed me to be a National Merit Finalist and I am confident in the strategies and skills needed to do well on these tests. I went to TJHSST for High School and know the ins and outs of the entrance test for that school as well.

My method of tutoring focuses on helping the student understand the material they are confused with and can work with all types of learners. I apply both skills based and content based tutoring to help students learn the material so that they can not only recall facts, but use their knowledge in a variety of different contexts whether it be word problems, analogies or simple math equations. I have helped students with a variety of academic goals including:

-Helping a student who was in danger of dropping out of High School due to grades to achieve A&B Honor Roll.

-Raising students' SAT scores by over 100 points per section and 300 points cumulatively.

Raising a student's ACT score from a 29 to a 35.

Helping students gain admission into prestigious schools such as:
William and Mary
Rochester Institute of Technology
Virginia Tech
University of Virginia
Columbia University
and many more.

I offer both online and in-person tutoring and would love to speak with you today about achieving your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been tutoring the ACT for over 5 years and have helped students achieve scores as high as 35! Students have improved their scores up to 6 points after working with me. I have thorough knowledge of this difficult test and can guide your student through the different strategies needed to get the score they want. I can also guide students and their parents on the differences between the ACT/SAT, the pros and cons of each and help decide which will be the best fit for their goals.

ACT Math

I have been tutoring the ACT for over 5 years and have helped students achieve scores as high as 35! Students have improved their scores up to 6 points after working with me. I have thorough knowledge of this difficult test and can guide your student through the different strategies needed to get the score they want. I can also guide students and their parents on the differences between the ACT/SAT, the pros and cons of each and help decide which will be the best fit for their goals.

Algebra 1

I have previously taught high school math courses from Algebra I through Pre-Calculus with Fairfax County. I also have over 10 years experience tutoring individuals in math and one of my favorite subjects is Algebra I. I know it can be confusing for students to understand the intricacies of X's instead of numbers but I can make it enjoyable and understandable for all Algebra I students. I have experience working with students from a wide variety of learning backgrounds including gifted students, students with ADD/ADHD and students with learning disabilities. I have experience helping students and parents understand IEPs and how to best utilize the accommodations that the student deserves most effectively. My students have raised their grades over 2 letter grades and are better equipped to continue with their math education when they work with me on Algebra I.

Algebra 2

I'm a tutor with over 10 years of experience in Algebra ll, identifying students' individual learning styles and developing an action plan to guide them through the struggles they experience while trying to master their subject. Often, I assess what sparks a student's interest in a subject and play off those interests to fully engage them in their study plan.

Biology

I was a biology major in college before becoming a high school Biology and Human Anatomy teacher. I have helped all flavors of biology students at the high school and undergrad. I help you wade through the details and discover the important information and themes in biology. Don't worry - we can make this class fun!

Chemistry

I was a chemistry tutor in college at Baylor University where I minored in chemistry. I have also taught chemistry at the high school level in Fairfax County. I have tutored dozens of students in Chemistry, AP Chemistry, SAT II Chemistry, and College Chemistry, with some students scoring in the 97th percentile and 5's on the AP/SAT Exams. I have consistently received strong recommendations from those that I tutor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a substitute and tutor for elementary students for over half a dozen years. Schools I have worked at include Crestwood Elementary and Lynnbrook elementary in Springfield. I have plenty of patience to help any young child learn the basics so they have a strong foundation to build on.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken both O Chem 1 and 2 and was subsequently placed on my professor's preferred tutor list for future students. I received the highest grade in the class on several of our major exams and received an A in both classes at the end of the semester. I also received an A in the O Chem lab section and graduated with a minor in chemistry.

SAT Math

I have been tutoring the SAT for over 5 years and have helped students achieve scores as high as 1530! Students have improved their scores up to 300 points after working with me. I have thorough knowledge of this difficult test and can guide your student through the different strategies needed to get the score they want. I can also guide students and their parents on the differences between the ACT/SAT, the pros and cons of each and help decide which will be the best fit for their goals.

Social Studies

I have successfully completed multiple social studies classes including AP European and U.S history and AP Government and have successfully tutored students in similar course while in college.

Sociology

I have successfully tutored fellow students in sociology while in college and completed a 1000 level class with a grade of an A.

Knowledgeable and explains things effectively

He helped me to understand the material that I was stuck on. Certain concepts were just not making sense and he explained good ways to remember how they work. I was more comfortable about my material and tables I was working with after our lesson.
