Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have a BS in Special Education and Elementary Education, and a Maters of Reading. I am a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner (W.D.P) and I am trained in Orton-Gillingham Reading. I am also trained in Lindamood-Bell Visualizing/Verbalizing and LiPS. These programs are highly regarded research based programs for teaching readers with Dyslexia. I am a currently a member of the International Dyslexia Association.

I hold a current teacher certification in the categories of elementary education, reading specialist, and general special education. Elementary Math

I have 24 successful years of teaching experience in grades three through six. Students enjoy working with me and are motivated to succeed. Teaching math to students who struggle with math or who are good math students who suddenly "hit a wall" in middle school is one of my passions. I use current best practices and keep on top of current research in the area of teaching mathematics. Students learn to see math as a puzzle they can solve, and come to enjoy the challenge!

Elementary Science

I have 24 successful years of teaching experience in grades three through six. Students enjoy working with me and are motivated to succeed. I design Science lessons to ensure my students are interested and engaged. I guild student learning so that they think like scientist.

English

My non-threatening approach to helping students with improve their grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling has proven successful with students of all abilities. I am trained in V/Ving (Visualization Verbalization) which is a method for helping students to improve the content of their writing. As my students develop their personal writing style, discover that writing is a craft that brings enjoyment.

Grammar

If you are dreading grammar lessons or are scared that you will never understand grammar, I am the tutor for you! I'll help you to identify the grammar errors you make, and then help you to develop your own personal tool kit for eliminating your grammatical errors.

Handwriting

I have 24 years experience as an educator. Every year I teach handwriting to individuals or small groups. I co-teach with an occupational therapist when students have significant difficulties with eye hand coordination. I use a direct, systematic approach to teaching handwriting that includes multi-sensory strategies.

Phonics

I hold a current teacher's license in the areas of elementary education, reading, and special education. I hold a Wilson Reading Practitioner certification. I am trained in Lindamood Phonemic Sequencing (LiPs) and n Orton-Gillingham Reading.

Prealgebra

I focus my prealgebra tutoring sessions on filling in the gaps in my student's learning that are causing his/her difficulty with learning algebra concepts. My students build their self-confidence and come to see algebra and math problems as puzzles that are fun to solve. If your child dislikes math, I am the tutor you want to hire!

Proofreading

There are quick, simple strategies for improving your proofreading skills. After one or two sessions, you will have developed your own personal tool kit for successfully proofreading your work. Bring multiple samples of your own writing for us to use during your tutoring sessions.

Reading

I am known for quickly identifying the underlying reasons for my student's difficulties with reading comprehension and decoding. Within a few sessions, my students are empowered and excited by how they are getting better at reading. Parents rave about the transformations they see in their child's reading skills.

Special Needs

I have a B.S. in Special Education and in Elementary Education, and a Masters in Reading. I have 17 years of experience as a special education, non-categorical and low-incidence. I have extensive experience working with students who have significant learning disabilities and/or complex needs. Students who I tutor discover the fun of learning and become intrinsically motivated to take responsibility for their learning.

SSAT

As a seasoned educator, I have extensive experience with teaching test taking skills. I focus on beefing up the skills that challenge students, teaching typical test vocabulary that students find unfamiliar, and coaching students to reduce their anxiety by using mindfulness and logic. Parents express their delight with the significant boost of confidence their children gain while working with me.

Study Skills

Given my 24 years of teaching experience, I have extensive knowledge in the area of study skills. My students learn strategies that make them independent learners such as using KWL, SQR3, skimming, scanning, visualization, self-monitoring of reading pace, text organization, graphic organizers, time management, goal setting, study habits, test taking skills, and how to avoid procrastination.

Vocabulary

Learning vocabulary is often boring. Many people find it difficult. I use humor, and effective study techniques to teach vocabulary. Students learn to use word structure and Latin prefixes, bases, and suffixes to help them to infer the meaning of unknown words.

Writing

Bring me a sample of your child's writing (or your writing!), regardless of how good or poor you think it is, and I'll use the sample as a spring board for teaching your child (or you) how to improve it. Before long, you will be amazed at your child's consistent improvements in organization, sentence structure, grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. I teach writing in a structured and nonthreatening manner that turns frustrated writers into confident writers.
