About Kate

Hey, my name is Kate! I am a music undergraduate student at James Madison University and I am currently enrolled and working towards my degree in Music Composition. I am also an avid reader and writer and am fond of fun words. I also love music theory, music history, teaching classical violin, Celtic, Irish, and Scottish fiddling. When I'm not doing that, I cook and bake, sew projects, knit, make colored pencil and acrylic art, craft, make jewelry, organize my home, and garden. If you want to learn or get better at any of these skills, let me know-I can and want to help you out!

I proofread many of Maggie Stiefvater's young adult novel drafts before she submitted them to her editors.

I was home-schooled growing up, and part of my education program I was a part of required very neat and specific handwriting skills.

If you think my areas of expertise will help you out, contact me right away, and we'll arrange a session and a study and learning plan for you. :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I am a music composition undergraduate major at James Madison University, and have experience writing music for performers and organizing ensembles to perform my music for rehearsals, recitals, and concerts. If you would like help finding your own unique style of writing, to expand your writing abilities, part-writing, error detection, writing for other instruments, I can help you out.

Ear Training

As a music composition undergraduate major at James Madison University, I had to take 4 semesters of ear training for my core music education, and I passed with flying colors for each of these classes. If you are a student trying to get an 'A' on that quiz, assignment, or test or simply trying to improve your musical ear senses, I can help you out!

Some of the things I can help you with:
-sight singing
-interval recognition
-chord recognition
-melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic dictation

General Music

I am a music composition undergraduate major at James Madison University, and I take subjects that range from written theory to aural theory, sight singing, instrumental lessons, composition lessons, orchestra, string quartet, chamber ensembles, music history, advanced topics and analysis, form and analysis, and more.

So if you would like to have a general music education that includes music history, ethnomusicology, music theory, orchestration, and study of musical forms, I can provide as broad or specific a musical appreciation and education as you would like to learn!

Music History

As a music composition undergraduate major, I needed to take three semesters of music history for my core music education, and because I love music history so much, I took a couple other music history electives on the side as well, and I passed with flying colors (all A's) in each of these classes. If you love music history and want to know more or if you need help at any level, college-level as well, just let me know!

Music Production

I have experience working with garageband, pro tools, and ableton. This past summer I was a music technology counselor for a camp and taught Ableton and compositional techniques to kids ages 7-16. I have also released an EP album, and I used pro tools and garageband to record and produce my own music.

Needlework

I have knitted for about 15+ years, and know the basics to more advanced techniques. Things that I can teach you or help you with:

-casting on
-knit and purl stitches
-faux cable stitch, seed stitch, other kinds of advanced stitches
-cabling
-following more complex patterns such as sweaters
-knitting socks
-intarsia and fair isle knitting
-creating or modifying your own patterns
-error detection and fixing mistakes such as dropped stitches or incorrect step order

Piano

As a music undergraduate student at James Madison University, I needed to take four classes of piano training as my core requirement for my degree. While I am not a piano major (I am a music composition major with a focus in violin) I do know beginner-intermediate piano and can teach you those skills before you move on to a higher level.

Sight Singing

I am a music composition undergraduate student at James Madison University and as a core part of my degree I needed and have taken 4 semesters of Aural Theory and Sight Singing. If you need help with your do re mi's, hearing harmonies and chords, dictating melodies and rhythms, I am here to help you, whether it is for personal gratification or for your school or program.

Violin

I am currently working on my undergraduate degree in Music Composition with my instrument of focus being the violin. I have played the violin for 15+ years, and have been taught by various professional violinists, including but not limited to Dr. Edwin Johonnot, Megan Bevill, Dr. Wanchi Huang, and Amadi Azikiwe.

I also perform Scottish, Irish, and Celtic fiddling, and have placed in competitions up and down the east coast, and organize charity events and concerts yearly for the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum.

I also taught lessons at Picker's Supply music shop in Fredericksburg, Virginia for a year, where I taught students of all ages both classical and fiddling methods as they requested.
