About James

My name is J.T. and I have a passion for statistics and teaching. I left my job in actuarial science to pursue my dream of becoming a professor. I finished my Master's in Statistics in December 2014 and am currently working towards my PhD. I hope to dedicate the rest of my career to teaching statistical concepts. I really enjoy simplifying the mathematics to make statistics easy to understand and intuitive. I'm also firm believer in using simple examples to bring complex topics down to an understandable level.

Currently, while completing my own graduate coursework, I am working as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Statistics at Virginia Tech. I have both led a recitation and taught a course in Introductory Statistics. I also have experience with tutoring and grading in other areas of undergraduate and graduate level statistics including Statistics with Applications in Engineering, Statistics with Applications in Psychology, Statistics with Biological Applications, Statistics for Social Sciences, and Regression Analysis.

I believe that the key to learning new mathematical concepts is to use simple examples. By starting off slowly, students can build their confidence to tackle the more complex problems. By understanding the underlying concept and intuition, students will not be intimidated by enigmatic mathematical formulas. Please, feel free to message me with any questions you may have!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Probability

I am currently enrolled in a Statistics graduate program and have taken several classes on Probability. Also, I have passed actuarial exam P (Probability). During my undergraduate studies, I tutored a student in probability.

Statistics

I am currently enrolled in a Statistics graduate program at Virginia Tech. I have taken courses in Inference, Regression, Probability, Design of Experiment, and Statistical Programming. During this time I have worked as a Teaching Assistant in several courses.
