About Doris

I enjoy working with individuals and small groups of students enabling them to increase test scores, improve knowledge in school subjects and/or make up classwork missed during an illness or due to a disability. I have done private and school-based tutoring in Williamsburg/James City County and Hanover County for 10+ years. I enjoy working with children and young adults of all ages. In addition, I have 11 years full-time experience as a special education teacher in Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.

I am available to tutor from 1:30 to 8 pm through the end of May, and 9 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday from June through August. I am friendly and fun, however I am firm on students sharing responsibility for their success. My base rate is $45/hour and I am able to tutor online or in person in the Williamsburg & Hampton/Newport News area.

I love math and taught high school General Math for one year. I tutored many students in elementary math over the years in K through 6th grades.

My master's degree is in reading education, and I am currently tutoring reading in the Williamsburg/James City County school division.

My bachelor's degree is in Elementary/Special Education and I have been a substitute teacher and tutor in all elementary grades.

I have worked with the special needs population from young children through adulthood. In addition to teaching and tutoring, I managed a group home company for adults with intellectual disabilities and autism.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child meet his or her full potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

In addition to having a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in Special Ed General Curriculum, I have taken several courses in Autism Spectrum Disorders. From 2005-2013 I managed a group home company in Mechanicsville, VA, which serves adults with intellectual disabilities and autism.

Autism

In addition to having a Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Commonwealth of Virginia in Special Education - General Curriculum, I have taken a few courses in Autism Spectrum Disorders from the Autism Society of Richmond and from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Elementary (K-6th)

Virginia Postgraduate professional license certified for elementary education PreK-6 as well as special education General Curriculum K-12.

Handwriting

I have substituted in many elementary schools over the years using and teaching good handwriting skills. I haven't been trained in any specific handwriting program but can follow procedures using a handwriting system with minimal preparation.

Phonics

I took a course in a modified version of the Orton Gillingham method of teaching reading to students with dyslexia years ago. I received my Masters Degree in Reading Education from the University of Delaware in 1981.

Reading

I have my Masters degree in Reading Education from the University of Delaware, and have taught reading to students from Kindergarten through high school. I have experience with many reading series and modes of instruction, so am able to use a variety of methods to find what's best for each individual student.

Social Studies

When teaching at Howard High School of Technology, I taught Civics and History to students with learning disabilities.

Study Skills

I have tutored for 10+ years and have trained students how to use study skills to be more successful in their academic classes. Reading for main ideas and details, underlining using color coding, chunking similar information together for easier processing, and note taking skills are some of the methods I use to increase students' abilities and efficiency in absorbing information.
