About Kathleen

During my time as an undergraduate student at Mary Baldwin College, I spent five semesters working as a Writing Center Tutor. My regular students came from a wide variety of backgrounds, including first generation college students, students with learning disabilities, and English-Language-Learners. I helped with papers from a variety of disciplines, from traditional freshmen composition essays to a biology senior thesis to a term paper on the mechanics of soccer coaching.

I majored in English at Mary Baldwin College, where I was a straight-A student. I am passionate about literature and the lessons it can teach, and I plan to ultimately pursue a PhD in English.

I graduated summa cum laude, received distinction in my English major, and, at the end of my junior year, was inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the national college honor society for English students. I have worked in professional writing in several contexts, which further increased my understanding of writing across disciplines. Lastly, I have experience working with young people. I completed a practicum in a 9th-grade English classroom during my college career, and I currently work part-time with girls aged 13 to 17 as an RA at the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted at Mary Baldwin College.

I encourage all middle/high school students and parents to contact me and learn more about scheduling lessons. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am a former English major and Writing Tutor, with a great command of the language. I believe my knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, usage, and diction makes me very qualified to tutor this particular subject. Also, when I took the ACT several years ago, I scored around the 90th percentile.

English

I was an English major in college, where I maintained a 3.9 major GPA and graduated with distinction in major. I spent a lot of my time in the writing center tutoring English composition students, many of whom found great success and higher grades. Many of the students who I helped were English Language Learners.

General Computer

As a student and worker in today's world, I have immense computer experience. I used computers for all, more or less, of my school work in college, and I also used them frequently in the workplace.

Grammar

I worked as a Writing Tutor for 2.5 years, helping students improve grammar among other skills. I also was a successful English major and have worked in professional writing.

Literature

I was a straight-A English major, and I am a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the national English Honor Society. I am passionate about literature and plan to ultimately pursue a PhD.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I used Microsoft PowerPoint for many presentations all throughout K-12 school and college. I also used in in my previous job doing communications work for a non-profit.

Microsoft Word

I used Microsoft Word for all of my essays throughout high school and college (and, as an English major, I was a frequent essay-writer). I am familiar with more detailed features like tracking changes and mail merge through my experience working in communications.

Proofreading

As a Writing Tutor, I acquired the skills to understand what "good" writing looks like.

Reading

I am a voracious reader, which helped me a lot during my time as a successful English student. I have excellent comprehension and interpretation skills.

SAT Reading

I was a successful English major in college, which allowed me to develop the more extensive vocabulary that the SAT Reading requires. I am skilled at using context clues and other strategies to define words, and my reading comprehension is excellent. I scored around the 95th percentile when I took the SAT in high school several years ago.

SAT Writing

As a former English major and writing tutor, I have immense writing skills. I possess immense knowledge of grammar, usage, and diction that can be applied to SAT Writing. In addition, I did very well (above 90th percentile) when I took the SATs several years ago.

Spelling

As part of my job as a writing tutor, I helped students correct their spelling and learn good habits for making educated guesses about the spelling of words they did not know. I also assisted students in learning homonyms and homophones.

Study Skills

I graduated college with a 3.9 GPA and distinction in my major, both of which I owe to excellent study habits. During college, I spent my sophomore year as a Peer Adviser to new freshmen in the honors program, helping them develop good time management and other important study skills. When I was a senior, I spent a semester tutoring a student with special needs, where I frequently helped her with understanding and internalizing class materials in order to study better.

Vocabulary

I was a successful English major, and I am a voracious reader. Through both of these, I have expanded my vocabulary immensely. I did well on portions of the SAT and GRE pertaining to vocabulary. I am skilled in using "context clues" and other hints for determining words I don't know.

Writing

I worked as a Writing Tutor for most of my college career, receiving many positive recommendations and reviews. I have also worked in professional writing, and I was a successful English major.
