About Selene

I taught for 19 years as a middle school Language Arts and History teacher. I chose to retire from the physical classroom in June of 2014 because of a desire to pursue writing, tutoring, and online instruction. There is an increasing need for one-on-one instruction and unfortunately the demands of the full-time teacher today limit effective tutoring opportunities. It is rewarding to work individually with a student and see them improve, gain confidence, and excel.

My passions are reading, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. I love words and helping students learn just how expanding their vocabulary can impact practically every subject area, as well as aid comprehension of test questions, answer choices, and reading passages. Understanding and using vocabulary variety also greatly enhances writing.

I have taught US History I and II, Civics, and Economics over a span of 11 years, and even though the nature of learning history is primarily memorization, the need for learning effective comprehension skills and test taking strategies is still a must. Throughout my teaching career, I often designed lessons to incorporate both language arts and history, as well as infusing science, music, art, and even math so that students will realize that Language Arts/English is not an isolated subject. It is the foundation for all other subjects.

During my 19 years, I taught inclusion classes which included a variety of special needs students, gifted students, and ESL students. I have a strong background in using technology in the classroom, hands-on instruction, and collaboration. I do not teach TO the student. My method is to first determine the student's needs, strengths, and challenges, and devise a plan that we can work on together. I am not a dictatorial instructor. I still love to learn and help others in their learning as well.

Beyond Middle School, I also edit and proof undergraduate and graduate level compositions, and recently tutored an adult for the English portion of the GRE.

We can discuss arrangements for appropriate and comfortable areas for tutoring sessions, and I am willing to travel to other locations as is convenient.

I look forward to hearing from you and developing exciting learning experiences that will help you succeed in your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SOL

I am qualified to tutor for the SOL, because for the past 16 years I taught English/language arts and/or US history in the Hampton City Public school system. During that time, I taught students skills for achieving success on the SOL (Standards of Learning) assessment for the State of Virginia. Each year I attended professional development workshops for SOL training and tutored students during and after school for the assessment. I have given the SOL both on paper and online, and assist students with VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) online tutorials and practice as well.

Writing

I have over 17 years of teaching experience in writing essays. I have also written persuasive articles for college courses, a college newspaper, and a medical journal. Writing is one of my passions, and I'm currently writing 2 books which hopefully will be best sellers one day.
