In high school I took many math and science courses, especially biology and human anatomy and physiology, where I excelled in the top of my class. Coming into college, I intended on being a biology major. After completing an introductory course in psychology, I realized that I was more interested in pursuing psychology as a degree. I played the trumpet in middle school and throughout high school, have been playing the piano for 11 years, and have been taking music theory courses while in college.
While in high school, my friends and other classmates would often ask me for help, whether in algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, biology, or human anatomy and physiology. Oftentimes many other students just couldn't "get it" from being in class, but they usually were able to understand after talking it through with me. I received many thanks from my peers for helping them through courses and explaining subjects in ways they could understand.
I thoroughly enjoy helping others, especially in an academic setting. There is something about helping others achieve success that drives me to want to assist those who need it. I love explaining concepts to people and seeing them understand for themselves and work it out in their own minds.
I'm not the type of person who will simply give out answers. I don't believe it is an effective way of learning. Instead, I prefer to help people through concepts step-by-step so that he or she can begin to apply the concepts to figuring out problems. I try to break things down into simpler parts and then have others put the parts back together so he or she sees how it functions as a whole and how it can be applied to other events or situations. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
