In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY (1990) and a Master's Degree in English from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA (1997). For the past four years, I have taught effective writing to Army Officers, from the rank of Captain to Lieutenant Colonel, at the Army Force Management School, Fort Belvoir, VA. My effective writing instruction has included content, accuracy, grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, format, organization, and packaging.
As the daughter of a College English Teacher, I learned correct grammar at a very young age. In fact, one summer, I wasn't allowed to go out and play until I had written a descriptive paragraph and had it corrected by my mother. I have further developed my expert knowledge, skills, and abilities in grammar as an Effective Writing Teacher for the Army and as a twice-published author in the professional Army journal, Military Review.
I am able to quickly and frequently find grammatical errors in any document, article, or book I read based upon my many years of experience reading, writing, and editing. Over the past four years, I was the volume author, editor, designer, and publisher of the U.S. Army War College Manual, "How The Army Runs," (600+pp) and assisted with the authoring, editing, and publishing of Army Regulation 71-32 (100+pp). I am routinely asked to proofread and edit the work of subordinates, peers, and supervisors because of my superior editing skills.
Having taken the SAT in high school and the ACT for graduate school, I am familiar with standard testing methods for effective writing. As an effective writing instructor, I focus heavily on the development of a thesis, topic sentences, and supporting paragraphs that flow sequentially and progressively to thoroughly address any topic. I can assist with concise and error-free argumentative, expository, and researched writing, as well as coach the best way to outline and organize thoughts in advance of writing.
Equipped with a Bachelor's and Master's in English, I have become an accomplished writer twice-published in Military Review, one of the Army's Premier Professional Journals. I also wrote an 86-page persuasive research paper required by my Military Arts & Science Master's Degree from the School of Advanced Military Studies at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. I have taught effective writing for the Army for the past four years, and eight of my students have gone on to publish their research papers in professional journals.
