Teaching is a wonderful career. I had not planned to become a teacher, but now I cannot imagine doing anything else. I have been teaching for almost 25 years. I became a teacher when I opened a pre-school in my home for my daughters and several other young children ranging from infants to 12 years old. When my girls went to public school, I went back to college to obtain my teaching credentials. I have been a student for 21 years. I love to learn. I have a Virginia Collegiate Professional License to teach pre-k through 6 general education and k-12 special education. I hold a Master of Science in Education - Special Education from Walden University (May 2014).
Most of my teaching experience is in elementary and middle school settings. The only level that I have yet to teach is high school. I specialize in working with students with disabilities or delays. By designing and modifying my lessons, I create ways to help struggling students understand and make connections with the material that they are required to learn. This allows each student to be successful at their ability level and increases their desire to learn.
My experience working with students with a variety of needs has broadened my perspective on teaching. It is not enough to instruct them. Teachers need to understand each student, respect each student, and provide the support that each student needs to be successful at whatever level that may be. Success leads to confidence.
I try to be flexible with time. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes. The location for tutoring can be in a public place, the student's home, or another site that is agreed upon by the student and myself.
I have taught students from kindergarten through 8th grade. I generally focus on reading and writing skills while incorporating content material. Vocabulary lessons that focus on words related to the standardized tests are a large part of my instruction.
I have used several spelling programs to help students master spelling patterns and conquer all of the exceptions in the English language. Many of the spelling activities are linked to content material through reading and writing research lessons.
All students learn differently. However, there are a variety of methods that can be implemented to improve their understanding. Scaffolding, modifying, and pacing lessons are some of the ways that help children make connections and retain information.
Learning is like building blocks. Students have to understand how each block fits before they can complete the final product.
I welcome student and parent feedback and background information. Understanding the 'whole' student helps me present information in ways that each student can relate to.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies. Teaching is a wonderful career. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have 19 years of experience working with students with disabilities including, but not limited to, ADD/ADHD. I earned a Master of Science in Education - Special Education. My experience includes lesson planning, progress monitoring, and modifications of lessons to meet the needs of individual students.
Reading is the basis of all learning. I have worked extensively with students at all levels and abilities up to 8th grade. Many of my lessons are integrated with content material. This type of learning helps students make connections to required material using reading and writing skills. For example, writing a report requires knowledge of the subject as well as reading and writing skills. Throughout the process of gathering information, students enhance their skills in research, writing, critical thinking, and computer usage.
I hold a Master of Science in Education - Special Education. My Virginia Professional Collegiate License was renewed in May 2015. I have also taken additional courses to enhance my understanding of ways to work with students with varying disabilities.
