I'm a licensed K-6 public school teacher in Virginia. I recently retired from Henrico County Public Schools where I taught first for one year and fourth for ten years. I use hands-on-learning activities to teach skills in a way that is fun and engaging for students. A good deal of my work has been with struggling students. I'm flexible, positive, cheerful, and easy to work with.

Worked on math skills with our 11 year old. Really helped him grasp the concept, all while he was enjoying it. He looked forward to his tutor sessions. Mary also helped him with homework from other subjects. She is always upbeat, pleasant and professional. Would highly recommend!
Mary has been remarkable with our daughter. We have seen a measurable difference in her academics and absolutely credit Mary for this shift. We have a lot of renewed confidence in our daughter "catching up". She is very perceptive, encouraging, and positive balanced with an eye on the areas of or in need. Peyton loves her as well. Mary is getting results and it's been a blessing. Thanks MARY! NO ONE should pass her up!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a current Virginia PreK-6 teaching license. I'm currently teaching first grade in Henrico County, and taught fourth grade for the previous 10 years.
I have an undergraduate degree in English and Elementary Education. Correct English grammar has been important to my success in graduate school (MBA) and my career as an Individual Grants Manager at the Ford Foundation and a teacher in Henrico County.
My license by the state of Virginia to teach k-6 implies that I am certified to teach phonics. I taught first grade which included teaching beginning, middle and ending consonant and vowel sounds, and their various spellings. I also taught forth grade which also included more complex sounds and spellings. This instruction was delivered during reading and word study.
