About Marguerite

Now that my long career in classroom teaching has ended, I continue to teach students in the best way possible: one-on-one. I get to know my students so I can relate every lesson to their strengths, their experience, and their goals. No need is too insignificant and no weakness is too overwhelming! I am profoundly patient and have instructed learners of all abilities, backgrounds, and ages, including adult learners.

My professional credentials include public school, homeschool, and community college teaching, International Baccalaureate training, SAT and SOL preparation, and standardized test development. I have a B.A. in English, an M.Ed. in Curriculum Development, and I am a Teacher-Consultant with the Northern Virginia Writing Project.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Although I am a certified 8-12 professional, I have many years of experience in tutoring elementary students in various subjects. I have worked individually with kindergarten through high school-aged children of all ability levels, from gifted to special needs and non-native English speakers, including experience with an enrichment program for children identified by No Child Left Behind. References are available from tutoring companies by which I have previously been employed.

Reading

In addition to having a teaching license, I am currently filling a long-term substitute position for a middle school reading specialist. When I was teaching full time, one of my responsibilities was to remediate high school students who had not yet passed their Reading/Writing SOL tests. I can provide recommendations from previous employers and students if you would like.

Study Skills

As a certified teaching professional, I understand the importance of strong study skills for achieving success. My experience with the International Baccalaureate curriculum demonstrated to me that a strong work ethic and effective time management skills will lead to growth and success. My approach to improving a student's study skills is grounded in identifying the student's learning style, modeling organizational tools, and rewarding achievement.
