About Robert

I have been playing guitar for 40 years now, and have spent 6 years in guitar lessons myself. Three of those years were devoted to studying classical guitar. I have been teaching for over 13 years, and now Guitar Instruction has become the main focal point of my playing.

I am currently a guitar instructor at a prominent guitar store in No. Va. where I have taught for 6 years and have had many very successful students. That's my gratification!

I was inspired to learn the guitar in the 60's as a young kid. The guitar sound in those old popular songs just grabbed me and I knew I had to learn how to play. I learned to play the old fashioned way by, learning to read music, and in many cases there were no options but to try to figure out what they were doing. I never had a dull moment and music became a big part of my life. When I was 30 I decided to go back into guitar lessons and study classical guitar. This was very challenging but made me a much better player all around.

My main passion is playing rock and roll, southern rock, blues, and acoustic stuff, but really enjoy just about all music and have played most of it at one time or another. I also enjoy making recordings and using effects to enhance and emulate the songs I play. I am constantly learning new songs myself. I never seem to get enough, it just never gets old to me. Giving guitar lessons enables me to expand my horizons, as I learn songs that I might not have otherwise tried. I never run out of songs to teach or learn.

In my early years I was influenced by the lively guitar sounds in pop-rock, The Beatles, The Yardbirds, Clapton, Led Zeplin, Grand Funk and the many other up and rising stars that came along at that point in time. I loved it all really.

If I had to chose the guitarists that have influenced me the most, in no particular order:
George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Steven Stills, Neil Young, Alvin Lee, Mark Farner, Charlie Hargertt, Toni Iommi, The Outlaws, Stevie Ray Vaungh, Lindsey Buckingham, David Gilmour, James Hetfield; all come to mind. I'm sure there are many others.

I have over 40 years of guitar playing experience and have been influenced by the great guitar players of the 60's, 70's and 80's. I have spent 6 years in private lessons during my life and have 13 years experience as a private guitar instructor. I am diversified as a guitar player, playing acoustic, electric and classical styles, with all genres.

As I became more accomplished I decided that the best way for me to use those skills was the pass the art on to others, so I started my career of teaching guitar lessons. It has been one of the best experiences of my life and a very big part of me now. It is what I enjoy, and I've enjoyed working with each and every student. I treat every student as if they are my only, and most important. I want you to get it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The primary reason that I feel qualifies me to be a guitar instructor is that I have 52 years of actual guitar playing experience. I started as a beginner at 8 years old and was in private lessons for the first three years. At age thirty I went back into lessons with a very good instructor with high credentials, and studied classical guitar for three more years.

My specific qualifications for teaching are that I have been teaching on a regular basis from my personal business, for 13 years, with many successful students. I am still active in that business and have current (satisfied) students. In addition, I am employed at a prominent music store in No. Va. as a guitar instructor where I teach many students. I have been with the company for 6 years, and again have had the privilege of working with many very talented students.

Perhaps most importantly is that I like to work with a wide range students; from absolute beginners up to intermediate-advanced as well. I have a very diversified types of songs and playing styles to share. I have strong skills in teaching music reading skills, acoustic skills as well as electric and finger picking techniques.
