About Claudia

Hello,

My name is Claudia M. I have four grown children, two are actually teachers, and I have two small grandchildren, ages 4 and 3. I graduated with a High Honors Master's Degree in Human Services from Capella University about a year ago, and I am currently in my second year as a Ph.D. student. I am also a Recreation Director in a long-term care facility, a career I have enjoyed for the past 16 years. Due to my educational path and my career, I spend lots of time reading and writing, proofreading, and re-writing. I do love to read, and I love to write, and I even enjoy proofreading and re-writing. As my path continues, I have even become a bit passionate about citations, references, and the need to adhere to scholarly writing standards.

I am passionate about so many things, but most of all I am passionate about making a difference in someone's life. My path in life was going to lead me to either work with children or older adults, and although I work with the latter I love spending time with children and I am a kid at heart. I became passionate about learning early in life. I loved to read, I loved history, and I always wanted to know how things worked and why things were the way they were. I still love to learn, and I am still passionate about making a difference, and I suppose that is why I have decided to pursue a Ph.D. at age 48. I believe everyone has potential; everyone has something inside them that makes them unique and special, and I believe it is never too late to follow your dreams and your passion whatever it may be.

I am currently in the early stages of my dissertation, which requires meticulous attention in every paper, assignment, and sections of my doctoral degree. I tend to think that the "mechanics" of writing, such as formatting and referencing, are the bane of my existence, and they are. These aspects of writing, including grammar and sentence structure, are nonetheless important, however, as I believe they make the writer more disciplined.

I grew up in Germany, and I learned English in 4th grade. I loved the English language, and I thought it sounded so much "nicer" and "prettier" than German. I will never forget, however, that my 4th grade English teacher believed that I would never "master" the English language. I was determined to prove her wrong, and I did, yet I believe that children learn when they are encouraged to believe in themselves. I would love to have the opportunity to work with your child and to help him, or her, become passionate about reading, writing, and learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

The documentation I complete daily, in my professional life, is submitted to the state as well as to other organizations. It must, therefore, be concise, grammatically correct, and free of errors. In my educational "life", this aspect is crucial as well as I am a Ph.D. student and as any written work I submit is heavily scrutinized.

Grammar

Call me "nerdy" or "odd," but I love punctuations and grammar. I will admit that it is somewhat necessary for me to "love" grammar. Written communication and documentation, major aspects of my professional life, need to be concise and free of errors; and discussion posts, as well as assignments, need to adhere to strict academic standards of doctoral-level writing, yet I truly think that grammar allows us to communicate effectively. In a world of texting, abbreviations, and Twitter feeds, we seem to have lost the ability to write professionally and therefore to communicate professionally. There is nothing wrong with casual writing, I do so as well daily, yet we must remember that we need to follow academic and professional standards in the "real" world.

Proofreading

I view the task of proofreading as an opportunity to help someone find their own "voice," rather than "correcting," or "criticising" their work.

Reading

My earliest childhood memories involve books. I believe that reading transforms us and that it allows us to find an "escape" from reality. It also opens a window to the world around us, nurturing not only our imagination but also our understanding. Reading with my children is a memory I hold dear, and I remember their eyes following my fingers as they traced along the words on the pages of their favorite books. I taught them to read, but I also instilled a passion for reading and for knowledge within them; and I am especially proud of this achievement.

Writing

I write. I write for work and I write for school. I write, and sometimes it seems that's all I do. My days are filled with official documents, emails, discussion posts, assignments, and notes for my dissertation. On occasion, I even write "just because". Writing is a necessary part of my life, yet I believe it is also therapeutic. When we write we pause, to think of the words we are going to convey, to reflect on the words we have written, and I believe that this is invaluable. I write, yet I enjoy doing so.
