About Ryan

I have extensive experience teaching students of all ages and backgrounds. I have a strong record of increasing test results and overall grades, and all my students show a dramatic improvement in character and demeanor.

I am a Martial Arts Instructor who coaches students on a daily basis in order to help them operate to their fullest potential. I push my students to perform beyond what is required of them, so that they are better equipped to handle the various obstacles in life. I approach tutoring in much the same way and often combine my coaching methods and philosophies with my teaching methods and systems. My goal with each of my students is to teach them well enough that I eventually put myself out of a job! I train my students to be active learners who understand how to research information, to reason through known facts, and to make educated conclusions for themselves in order to give them the tools necessary to solve real-world scenarios.

I believe that every student has the potential for genius inside of them, just waiting to be revealed. My favorite method of teaching is guiding students through a new topic by asking them a series of questions that lead them to the correct answer. I consistently research new teaching methods, psychological studies, and educational movements in order to stay current with academic trends, and to provide my students with the best instruction possible. I use what I know about psychology and learning styles to develop a method tailored to each of my students' needs. It is very important to me to build a trusting relationship with my students in which they know that I have their best interests at heart and that I truly do care for their success. I like to spend time getting to know each of my students by dedicating a small portion of each session to talking about the day and sharing what is on our minds.

My most proficient subject to tutor is Essay Development. I developed a method for writing academic essays while tutoring at Germanna Community College. Students had overwhelming success and completed their essays in half the time. Since then, I have hosted many writing workshops and seminars demonstrating the simplicity of writing an essay. I like to teach my students how to make an essay essentially write itself. I do this by showing my students how to strategically research, brain storm with a plan, and effectively outline.

Though I am most adept at teaching students how to write, Math is my favorite subject to tutor because it always offers a new puzzle with every problem. I have a vast background in mathematics ranging from algebra to basic arithmetic to statistics to discreet mathematics. I have hosted math workshops and drop-in math labs for college students at Germanna Community College. I also collaborated with the college staff to create multiple explanatory handouts on various mathematical topics such as graphing for pre-calculus and using imaginary numbers. I like to encourage my students to use what they have learned in math to help them solve new topics before I instruct them.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you become a successful student!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a Martial Arts Coach, I have much experience handling and communicating with students that have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. I also study Psychology at UMW and research various methods to approaching students with hyperactive functions. Through research and experience, I have come to the belief that ADD and ADHD are not negative disorders. I believe that students with ADD and ADHD simply need to be taught how their brain works and how to use their hyperactive functions to their advantage.

Algebra 1

I have tutored algebra 1 students for over 5 years. I began as a tutor at Germanna Community College by helping GED and developmental math students. I now focus mainly with grade school students. I walk students step by step through each new concept, explaining why each concept functions the way it does. I give tips on how to be more successful and to avoid common mathematic mistakes.

ASVAB

I have been a soldier in the Army Reserves since 2011. After taking the ASVAB and seeing numerous recruits struggle with various portions of the test, I began studying the ASVAB in order to help future recruits score higher. Since then, I have had the great opportunity to help many recruits score high on the ASVAB. I introduce students to the various sections of the ASVAB and address their specific needs and concerns.

Elementary Math

I help elementary school students understand the fundamental concepts of math. It is imperative for elementary students to have a firm understanding of math so that they are better equipped for later grades. I have helped many elementary students increase their math grades by developing a proficiency in basic arithmetic.

Fitness

I have been teaching fitness for the past 7 years. I am a martial arts instructor and a fitness trainer at Team Manuel Karate and Kickboxing. I host adult kickboxing fitness classes and lead training sessions. I also develop fitness plans and lead physical training for soldiers in the US Army. I have trained soldiers for the Army Physical Fitness Test by decreasing their 2-mile run time and increasing their push-up and sit-up scores.

General Music

I have studied and used general music theory for eight years. I am the minister of music at my local community church. I use music theory to develop set lists and assign parts to each worship service. I also teach guitar and incorporate music theory in many of my lessons.

Guitar

I have been playing the guitar for over 10 years and have been serving as the minister of music for my local community church for the past 3 years. I enjoy helping students tap into their musical potential. Along with teaching basic guitarmanship, I also incorporate general music theory and stage performance.

Martial Arts

I am a martial arts coach at Team Manuel Karate and Kickboxing. I have been training in various forms of martial arts since the age of seven. I now instruct Karate, TaeKwonDo, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Tactical Combatives.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is one of my favorite categories in math to tutor. I teach students how to play around with numbers and to use what they have already learned to solve new problems. It is very important that students develop good habits such as neatly writing down all their work and keeping numbers in their respective columns and places. I push my students beyond the lesson plan so that math homework becomes a non-issue.

SAT Math

Over the past five years, I have helped many students study for the SAT math sections. I introduce students to the types of questions that will be on the SAT and give them tips on how to best tackle the various problems. With sufficient practice and instruction, my students are well prepared to succeed in the math sections of the SAT.
