After being trained in standardized test instruction by Kaplan (the leading test prep company), I have logged over 2,000 hours as a tutor over the last three years. In addition to tutoring, I teach Philosophy as an adjunct professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
The students who come to me for help with the SAT, ACT, ASVAB, GRE, or GED are taught the same test-preparation and test-taking techniques that I used myself to score 780 math/770 verbal on the SAT, and to earn perfect scores (800s) on the GRE math and verbal. I also tutor in Math, Physics, Chemistry, English, Latin, Spanish, and Writing for middle school, high school, and college.
Whether a student is looking for help with algebra equations or with the SAT writing section, I always begin by identifying the areas in which the student needs to improve (by means of practice tests and conversation with the student), so that we can focus our time on strengthening these weaknesses from the very first lesson. By assigning challenging homework and reviewing it at the student’s own pace, I ensure that he or she makes steady progress without being overwhelmed.
Students who meet with me in groups receive a substantial discount--every student after the first one only pays half my regular rate.
Since my only goal is to help you achieve yours, I do not bill for any lesson with which the student or parent is not entirely satisfied, and I frequently ask for feedback.
My schedule is flexible, so I try to accommodate the student's schedule as much as possible. I prefer to meet in group study rooms that I reserve at the downtown Fredericksburg library, England Run Library, and Salem Church Library since these are optimal places to get a lot of work done together, but I am open to other locations that are more convenient for the student.
I look forward to hearing from you, and to working with you! Excellent teacher. After the summer sessions with the Manigault Institute, scores were still not satisfactory. After a few months with Michael and 2 more tries, SAT scores were up by 120/90 points.
Thanks, Eric! It's been a pleasure working with Alex, and I wish him all the best in college next year!
Dr. Michael tutored our 16 year old son throughout his sophomore year of high school. They mainly focused on his Honors English and Chemistry classes, as well as his AP History course. Michael without a doubt helped him improve his test scores and overal performance. We were extremely pleased and plan to continue working with Michael for SAT prep and his math and science courses his junior year.
patient, direct and lesson-focused, Michael does a great job with my son. He is always on time and gives us great feedback. I highly recommend working with him.
When my twins were juniors, they needed help with Algebra II, Honors Chemistry and preparing for the SAT. They met with Michael once a week for an hour. Michael was very flexible regarding topic of study. With Michael's supervision, they completed homework and study guides according to the need for the week. Many times one or the other could not attend whenever another school, sport or church commitment conflicted with our standing appointment. Michael remained very flexible allowing us opportunities to reschedule with advance notice. We continued tutoring over summer for SAT prep and throughout senior year, covering Physics and Math Analysis/Algebra III. My kids are graduating next week and heading to James Madison University in the fall, but we have already discussed continuing over the summer to stay sharp and be better prepared for College Math and potential remote tutoring sessions later during the school year. My son has especially enjoyed his time learning with Michael and getting to know him.
Dr. Michael was out. standing. in his field ... (We had to call him in from the rain.) :p
My 17-year-old girl was very comfy with her SATs after only two lessons at our local library. We will certainly be contacting him again for any more SAT or ACT tests in her future!
Thank you, Dr. Michael! ;)
Michael instills confidence and exposes many of the test taking "myths". He works a lot on strategies that will be applied during the test and does not waste any time during the session. It is very efficient so the child stays completely focused.
I never post reviews, but since Dr. Michael deserved a great review, I decided to do so.
My daughter is in 9th grade and was taking an accelerated Algebra 2/Trig honors class. She was getting a C and in less than a month, with Dr. Michael's help, she got an A on her final exam which boosted her final grade to a B. A miracle of sorts. We are VERY HAPPY.
We tried 3 other math tutors from Wyant, but Dr. Michael was the best...he gets to the point, very precise, does not waste time explaining like other tutors. Simplifies problems so my daughter understands easily.
We are so fortunate to have found Dr. Michael. Our daughter's SAT scores went up significantly after only 5 sessions with Michael. After an extended school absence with a bout of the flu, our daughter fell behind in her AP Statistics class. Michael was able to fit her in to his already busy schedule. She feels much more confident in the material after a couple of tutoring sessions. We highly recommend Dr. Michael. He really is a great teacher. You will not be disappointed.
He Tutored me Philosophy and he was very patient. He explained to me professionally that made me understand. Thank you. I highly recommend him to tutor others.
We have been using Michael as our GoTo Tutor for about a year now. He has been extraordinarily helpful with STEM subjects and help our son raise his PSAT score by about 250 points. We continue to use him and would recommend him without hesitation.
Dr. Michael is an amazing teacher. He is not only extremely personable and knowledgeable but also great at keeping the content understandable and interesting for my kids.
Dr. Michael worked with me on essay writing. He provided helpful feedback on my graduate school application essay. I'm very pleased with the final product. I enjoy working with Dr. Michael. I have been very comfortable asking questions and getting his input on any challenge I've faced in preparing for the GRE.
Dr. Michael teaches me precalculus. He is able to explain solutions in depth, so I can understand the concepts. His sense of humor put me at ease. Math and I don't seem to get along, but I feel I can improve the relationship now that I am gaining more understanding of its complexity. Thanks!
Michael has been absolutely amazing. My daughter loves working with him. She says he makes learning fun and understandable. With Michael's help, my daughter increased her PSAT score by 190 points! She increased her reading/writing score by 40 points and she increased her math score by 150. We are so thankful for Michael!
Grace did very well
In her algebra2/trig test and Natalie was able to hand in the past due assignment. We will ask Michael to tutor again - thanks!
My son feels very comfortable with Michael and will continue to schedule sessions with him. Michael has been tutoring him in geometry and soon to be SAT prep for the spring.
Michael has been helping me study for the GRE Exam. We have only had a few sessions together online, but so far I have received a lot of helpful feedback and I am glad that I chose him as a tutor!
Michael is very helpful. He takes you exactly where you are and gives you the tools to see immediate progress and helps make you a more competitive test taker.
Michael helped me outline some ideas for grad school essays. He also went over 3 essays that I previously wrote and did some corrections. He was patient, understanding, and easy to work with.
Michael was a great tutor. He is familiar with GRE content and strategies. He was great at explaining vocabularies with examples and word roots. I would recommend him to you if you are looking for GRE tutoring.
Michael is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He is also very efficient I was able to get all of my questions answered within the hour.
Michael helped me review for the math portion of the GRE. He is very knowledgeable, patient, and really easy to talk too. I learned a lot from him in a short period of time. My quantitative score increased 7 points! I would definitely suggest him to anyone struggling with any subject.
Thanks, Kayla! It was a pleasure working with you as well. Congratulations, and best of luck to you in grad school!
Michael is an outstanding tutor. He has gone out of his way to explain things in a way that my 15-year old can understand (using multiple different explanations if needed). He communicates at a level my 15-year old understands, without being "lecture-ish". He explains the why's....not just "do it this way".
And he does this in a very down to earth manner. He's approachable.....my 15-year old doesn't feel "dumb" when he asks for help/another explanation.
In addition, Michael is extremely flexible with his schedule, and exceptionally responsive via email.
Thanks, Shane! It's been a pleasure working with Nic, and I look forward to doing so in the future!
Michael is just a great tutor with my 7th grade son. He has been patient and so incrediblely knowledgeable when working with my middle schooler which is notoriously a difficult age !
Thanks, Amanda! It's been a pleasure working with Cameron, and I look forward to doing so in the future!
Michael is very knowledgeable and patient. He has helped me with my AP Chemistry class, and I have already received better test grades after only 2 sessions.
Thanks, Ben! It was a pleasure working with you as well. Best of luck to you in finishing high school and starting college!
I have never used a tutor before and was very anxious about our first lesson. Michael right off the bat put me at ease and made me feel comfortable. He is very approachable and kind. He showed me how to solve certain problems in ways I hadn't seen before that made things SO much easier to understand. Michael seemed more than happy to redo or approach a problem from another way when I didn't understand something he did. I definitely recommend him to anyone needing a tutor.
Thanks, Marissa! It was a pleasure working with you as well. Best of luck to you in grad school and beyond!
I contacted Michael to help prepare for the GRE in order to apply to a Physician Assistant program. Being a former Kaplan instructor, he is very familiar with standardized testing and how to prepare for it. After our first lesson, I purchased the Kaplan GRE Premier 2016 study book for $39.99. I would have gladly spent twice that; the book is a must have. It comes with 6 full length practice exams, including a full length diagnostic exam to see which areas will need the most attention. There are also thousands of sample questions, videos, etc. I took a full length diagnostic GRE exam following my first session with Michael and scored a 306. No doubt the tips he gave me during our first lesson raised my diagnostic score a bit compared to what it would have been had I taken it with no preparation whatsoever.
I continued to take a practice exam every week. During our sessions, Michael would go through the entire exam with me to cover the areas I struggled with. He would also generate custom quizzes from the Kaplan online resources to walk me through the process of figuring out the answers real time. In about one month, Michael helped me go from a 306 (152 verbal/154 quantitative) on my online diagnostic exam to a 321 (161 verbal/160 quantitative) on the official GRE. No doubt this man helped me achieve such a competitive score.
I also want to add that Michael is just an all-around great guy. He is easy to talk to, super intelligent, and genuinely cares about your performance. If you put in the work, he will do everything he can to ensure you reach your goals.
Thanks, Michael! Best of luck to you in grad school!
Michael is an excellent tutor. My son's SAT scores increased tremendously (50 verbal / 170 math) with no more than 8 tutoring sessions. He is easy to work with and works well with young adults. My son felt very confident during SAT testing and would not had scored well without Michael's help. Michael's evaluation of my son's strengths and weaknesses were spot on!
Thanks, Tammy! It was great working with Christian--best of luck to him in college next year!
Michael has been tutoring my son in precalculus. He is a great tutor and helps him clearly understand the math concepts instead of just plugging numbers in formulas and solving problems. He responds promptly to email requests and is flexible and willing to work with your schedule. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who needs tutoring in math.
Thanks, Meb! It's been a pleasure working with your son, and I look forward to doing so in the future!
Michael helped me get through some pretty tough problems and he was very pleasant and determined to help. He was very accessible and flexible and available to meet my needs.
Thanks, Marcie! Glad I was able to help.
Micheal responded quickly to my request for a tutor. My son needed to write an essay. Micheal helped him brain storm and pull ideas that he never knew he had. Micheal had great ideas to impart and was quite knowledgeable on the writing process. He gave great tips for my son to continue using. When they were finish what seemed like a difficult task was reduced to a simple and manageable task. I will use Micheal again.
Thanks, Avril! It was a pleasure working with both of you as well, and I look forward to doing so again!
My daughter spoke very highly of her first trigonometry session. I was amazed as well of her joy to be able to come home after one session and her confidence on the subject matter be increased greatly. Looking forward to next weeks session.
Thanks, Jeff! It was a pleasure working with Shelby, and I look forward to continuing my lessons with her.
This is our first time working with a tutor for my son who has been struggling with Calculus. We couldn't be happier to be working with Michael as he is very knowledgeable and explains things in a way that made it easier for my son to understand. I knew right away that this was a great decision to get a tutor as I could see immediately after the first lesson that he was less stressed, seemed to relax and felt much more confident. My son's exact words were, "It helps to know that I can do it, that I can understand it as soon as someone just explained it to me in a way that made sense". For a parent those words are golden!
Thanks, Kathleen! It's been a pleasure working with Caleb, and I look forward to many more productive lessons in the future.
Michael did an awesome job with tutoring my son. He learned more math with a few weeks of tutoring than he did in his whole math class. He is very knowledgeable and has a great way of teaching. I would highly recommend him for tutoring.
Thanks, Tammy! It was a pleasure working with Jake, and I look forward to doing so again in the future.
Michael worked with our son in preparation for the SAT for both Math and English. Our son feels more confident and has increased his SAT practice test scores by 300 points so far.
Thanks, Laurie! It was a pleasure working with your son. Best of luck to him in college and beyond!
He helped me on the grammar and reading. He was a really good tutor. We will continue to get our goals in the grammar.
Thanks, Tarad! It's been a pleasure working with you. Best of luck to you in achieving your goals!
Michael is easily contacted. His schedule is occasionally rather full, but he makes it work. He tutored me for my second semester of college calculus. Michael was not only great with the "how" but also the "why." Along with being very patient, he was able to help me truly understand what was happening in the mathematics, which is really what I needed. I don't do well just memorizing formulas unless I know how those equations or concepts are derived. He made such derivations clear to me. Aside from being a wonderful tutor, he's also a very fascinating person. I found myself having several thought-provoking conversations with him after our lessons had ended. I highly recommend him as a tutor, and I would certainly hire him again.
Thanks, Ben! I also greatly enjoyed our lessons and conversations. Best of luck to you with the rest of college and beyond!
We are happy to say that Michael made it possible for my high school kid to pass AP Calculus, and my college kid to pass Calculus II this past year. He is a very patient teacher and made my kids understand the lessons clearly. We will DEFINITELY use him again for future tutoring help if needed! THANK YOU Michael!!!
Thanks, Maria! It was great working with your sons. Best of luck to both of them in college and beyond!
Michael has been tutoring my son for a few months. He was very helpful in many subjects and preparing him for the SAT test.
Thanks, Alisa! I look forward to working with Cole again soon.
I came to Michael as a student attending NVCC trying to relearn algebra before trying to move on to more advanced math classes. I was returning to school after years of not taking a single math class and Michael was patient and not only refreshed my memory on many aspect of algebra, but also taught me new ways to approach problems I had a harder time with. He was always very prompt on returning emails, phone calls, and texts. I would recommend him without hesitation as he is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience tutoring/teaching to back it up.
Thanks, Devin! It was a pleasure working with you. Best of luck to you in your future math classes!
Michael is an excellent tutor. This is because of his strong ability to clearly explain difficult topics. He primarily tutors me in Calculus. Since the fourth grade, my favorite subject has been math and Calculus was the first math course I've ever struggled with. This changed, however, when I started receiving lessons from Michael. He taught me to think with a different creative problem-solving mindset essential for Calculus, In math courses such as Algebra II, I was used to simply memorizing known patterns of problem-solving instead of coming up with my own patterns. This is crucial when dealing with advanced math, and I am very grateful that he instilled this mindset in me. It will be a tremendous help in college. I recommend Michael for anyone with a desire to learn more about math.
Thanks, Jonathan! It's been a pleasure helping you with calculus. Best of luck in college next year!
Working with Michael is easy because he explains concepts in multiple ways, analyzes any errors made and shows how the ACT is going to ask about those concepts. After working with him, our child's composite score rose by 5 points. As a bonus, he is funny and does not belabor any concepts already understood. Completely recommend Michael's tutoring services, and we will be using him again.
Thanks, Cynthia! Congratulations to Edward for scoring in the 99th percentile!
Michael helped me prepare for my second chance at the SAT. I only had a few days to prepare with Michael, but in the end I felt extremely confident! Michael was very friendly and helped me plan and study for my SAT. Two thumbs up for Michael!
Thanks, Alex! Best of luck in college and beyond!
Michael provides great explanations for math concepts making it easier for my son to understand. My son is very comfortable asking Michael questions and always leaves a tutoring session feeling more confident with his math skills.
Thanks, Maria! It's been a pleasure working with Johnny, and I look forward to doing so in the future.
My son was having a very difficult time in HS geometry. He tried attending every tutoring session and help session his teacher had time for. Understanding the teacher/student ratio, I knew my son needed one on one help. He was just not learning the material, and needed one on one help. From the beginning Michael was willing to help. He took the time to figure out where the disconnect was. He took the time to explain test taking skills, and explained preparation for tests as well as test techniques. Michael never treated my son as if he was the problem. He guided him, and slowly began to adapt to his learning style. It feels really good to see my son's face and reaction when he got a 90% on his quiz. Not to mention his midterm- 86%. With high school kids being overwhelmed with sports, lack of sleep, anxiety, and deadlines, having a personal tutor has helped take the stress off my son. Michael is very flexible and often times can see us with short notice. He is also flexible with tutoring time. If my son needs extra help, he is willing to stay an extra hour. What is very helpful also is the session review. I receive an email from Michael explaining what was covered in the session, and what was covered. I highly recommend him.
Thanks, Juliette, and congrats to Mauricio for the awesome quiz and test scores!
Our son was having trouble with high school geometry. We hired another tutor, but he had a hard time understanding what was being taught. Thank goodness we found Michael. He understands the material and he is able to help our son have a better understanding of lessons. Since we started working with Michael our son’s grades have increased one level.
Thanks, John! It's been a pleasure working with Ryan, and I'm happy to hear about the improvement in his grades. Congrats!
Michael was very easy to work with. Ashley's test and homework grades went up during her time working w/ Michael. Michael was also helping with SAT prep. Highly recommend.
Thanks, Heather! Best of luck to Ashley on the SAT and beyond!
Michael is a very patient, kind, punctual, and skillful tutor. I highly recommend him for any other students who struggle with Algebra. He went above and beyond my expectations! A+!!!
Sincerely, a very satisfied and grateful student.
Thanks, Emily! It was a pleasure working with you. Congratulations on passing your placement exam, and best of luck to you in finishing your degree!
Michael tutored my son in Latin, and was outstanding! His subject matter knowledge was superb but even better was his patience and perseverance with a very difficult student. Michael worked with him to gain his trust and confidence and the results were immediate. My son's grades started improving as did his approach to learning a very difficult subject. I wholeheartedly recommend Michael!
Thanks, Rosemary! Best of luck to Matt in his future studies!
We have had nothing but great results working with Michael. My daughter was frustrated and getting lost with the fast pace the teacher was trying to keep. She was an honor student who just couldn't keep up in her advanced Math Analysis class, along with everything else she was doing. Michael helped her see things more clearly, and she is doing a much better job with the pace of the class. She was having trouble understanding the work she was doing sometimes until Michael helped her out. Her grades just keep getting better and better. He helped her to realize that she knows the stuff better than she thought she did and has helped change her outlook into a positive one that produces great results and success. I absolutely would recommend you give him a call. I guarantee he will help you and he is incredibly easy to work with.
Thanks for the awesome feedback, Joe! It has been a pleasure working with Jordan, and I look forward to doing so in the future!
I have worked with a couple of different tutors now. He was able to quickly ramp up and figure out where things were at. He took the time to help me understand the problems due to my confusion or lack of fundamentals. I recommend him if your child is not grasping the concepts at school. He kept things light and was able to clearly communicate with me the concepts I needed in an advanced math.
Thanks, Sean! It was a pleasure helping you get through that Calculus class. Best of luck to you in completing your degree!
Michael was wonderful and his schedule was flexible as well! After just three short tutoring sessions, my son's test score improved 300%!!! Thanks so much!
Thanks, Tina! Congrats to Trey for the good score, and best of luck to him in his degree progress!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
