I have always wanted to be a teacher in some form or another. I believe this has stemmed from my unquenchable curiosity about the world around me. I want to pass that down to the students I teach every single day. I am certified in the State of Virginia in ESOL (K-12) and Social Studies (6-12). I have taught formally over six years. Six of those years were in South Korea at two different universities, a high school and a middle school. Currently, I am teaching ESL in elementary school here in Virginia. I have my Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Anthropology. Finally, I am a foreign language enthusiast and have studied German, Korean and Spanish.
I specialize in tutoring English as a Second Language, TOEFL, IELTS, History, Social Studies and elementary subjects. My goal is to engage and challenge my students. I believe in having high expectations. Students live up to the expectations you set for them. I want my students to believe they are capable of mastering the subject. I assign homework to ensure mastery of the areas students are struggling with. I will also provide progress reports to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses.
As I have high expectations for my students, I have the same for myself. I desire feedback to inform my instruction. If you are not completely satisfied, I will not bill the parent or student.
I am flexible with my time, but I do ask for 24 hours for cancellation. I offer makeup classes.

We have just recently started working with Lyndon. My son's tutoring needs are a little different than most considering he is in high school, yet on an elementary grade reading level. I am very pleased with Lyndon's services so far. My son looks forward to his tutoring sessions and is excited to improve his reading skills. Lyndon is a great motivator, very professional and friendly. I look forward to working with Lyndon long term.
Thank you very much for the feedback. Your son is an absolute pleasure to teach. I know he will continue to make great progress.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a teacher of English for the past seven years, I often have found ways to integrate grammar instruction into my classes. Being able to articulate oneself in a concise and accurate fashion is critical to securing employment. One of the major areas I focused on during my MA studies was Grammar Pedagogy or the role of grammar in English instruction. I believe grammar should be taught contextually through reading, speaking and writing. It should not be taught in isolation.
As an ESL teacher at an elementary school, phonics and phonemic awareness is primarily what I teach for my K-1 students. Throughout my year of teaching, I have seen students master the alphabet and blend words independently. I have many resources that enable my students to excel in phonics. I use data to pinpoint where my student is, and then I teach sounds and high frequency words to aid with decoding. By improving decoding and high frequency word knowledge, students transition from the learning to read stage to the reading to learn stage.
I have taught ESL for the past six years. Five of those years I taught in South Korea. As part of my instruction, I taught my students reading strategies so they could become independent readers. I strongly believe in extensive reading, and promoting a love of reading in every student I teach. With my elementary school students, I take my students through phonics, phonemic awareness activities and reading strategies ranging from beginning to advanced. I support and supplement what my students are learning in the classroom.
