Native German-speaker, who is fluent in German, English, French and Greek on a post-graduate level. I possess a double Bachelor/Masters in History and Archaeology from the University of Athens (Greece) and a Masters of Education from the University of Mary Washington. I have knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek and extensive teaching/tutoring experience.
I lived and studied for 10 years in Greece where I worked simultaneously as a German teacher at two private schools and as a simultaneous interpreter for German, Greek and English and privately tutored dozens of students from age 5-50. Student language requirements ranged from Kindergarten immersion to professors prepping for an academic year in Germany. While living in Europe, I spent most summers at archaeological digs in Cyprus and the Middle East. After my move to the U.S., I worked for the Greek Department of the Foreign Service Institute. I then lived in franco-phone Mauritania (West Africa) where I briefly taught English at the French High School and established a German program in collaboration with the German Embassy at the French College Ecole Nationale d'Administration. I also organized an interpreting service for French and English for a U.S. Peace Corps conference.
Back in the States, I taught real estate pre-licensing courses for the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors and several brokerage firms. After moving to Virginia, I decided to bring my educational requirements up-to-date and obtained another Masters degree (Education) from the University of Mary Washington in Stafford. Since then, I have taught German in public schools in three Virginia counties. I am proficient in instructional technology, including desktop publishing, web authoring and telecommunications. Beate was more than welcoming to the student and the parent who attended the first session. She was patient, consistent in her instruction method, and very helpful. As a parent, I feel very comfortable leaving my child in her capable hands. He was working hard with the resources he had available, but Beate showed him new techniques in the first session that he has put into action. As a result, his grade has already improved and he has renewed confidence. She not only helps with the assigned topic, but helps build skills that can be applied to other aspects of life and helps renew confidence in struggling student. Highly recommend Bea as a French tutor.
I enjoy tutoring your son and am glad that you saw results so quickly. General techniques, as you say, will serve him not only now, but later in college and life. Self-confidence will do the rest. He is definitely on the right path.
Beate is a great tutor, she is a very intelligent person and felt confident when she would tutor me. She is experienced and will tutor in different ways until her student understands.
Beate is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met! She is engaging, allows me to learn at my own pace and is quite encouraging. Her aptitude in languages makes for interesting educational ties to history, geography, culture and other subjects beyond just language.
This tutor is great! She is very patient when you're having trouble learning a subject. Also she breaks down the material so that you can get a core understanding of the language. Not only do you learn how to speak German, but also how our own cultural understanding differs from that of German society. She's very easy to get along with and is very friendly. I highly recommend this tutor if you are looking to learn a new language or just need some extra help in school!
Our son has completed two years with Mrs. B. If not for her, he would not be graduating from UMW. She is amazing and I know he will miss her tutoring. If anyone needs help in any subject that she teaches it is well worth it. As parent,s she earns our highest praise!
Thank you for your kind words. You have been a great student and I am glad that our tutoring sessions really made a difference in your studies. "Viel Erfolg!" and good luck in the Navy! I will miss our classes and your hunger for knowledge.
Frau Beate is one of the best tutors I have encountered. Her periods of instruction are more than just learning how to speak, read, and write German; she helps teach you these things by also integrating an understanding of German culture and traditions.
Her lessons are fun and she really knows how to simplify the period of instruction in a way that has made learning German much easier for me. Honestly, I have learned more with regard to German language during my lessons with Frau Beate than I had during the three years I lived in Germany while stationed there with the U.S. Military. I would highly recommend anyone looking to learn German to select Frau Beate as your tutor. You won't regret it!
It is good to have a student with such a large vocabulary. I am very happy with your rapid progress in grammar, syntax and cultural questions. Dedication is half the job and you are very motivated. Hope you have a great time in Germany.
She did not listen to my requests for what to discuss or study. She selected what she wanted to do or thought was appropriate. This is not high school. I have done this many times before and when I request something, I expect the tutor does it. I am paying. I requested 3 times the subject, and she did something totally different. I will not continue and do not recommend her. She is the only tutor I have worked with that has done this. Bad experience.
I am sorry that you feel the way you do. Your request was to practice German which later was narrowed down to doing translations on news articles of unspecified content and speak nothing but German. I sent you a sample of what I could do for you two weeks prior to our lesson followed by two e-articles on separate subjects without any response or even an acknowledgement. Due to your lack of response, I e-mailed you over 20 questions so we would have something with which to start our classes. The day of the lesson you said you had skimmed the article only. During class, you made no attempt to translate or answer any of the questions despite my prompting while assuring me that you understood. You also did not make any alternate suggestions of what you would like to do. If you did not like the materials, you had every opportunity to contact me and ask for different material. You get out of a lesson only as much as you put in. Your e-mails were unprofessional at best.
A year later and I still love the Greek lessons. We know times, phrases, Greek history, Greek geography, the famous alphabet and customs... the lessons are a joy each week. It is nice to be able to ask the family something in Greek and they can answer!! Thanks Bea!
Beate is an amazing instructor with a gift for teaching German to multiple ability groups at the same time. My 7 year old son and I take lessons together and are at very different levels. Beate is able to cater the lesson to both my son's level (beginner) and my level (a little further than beginner) with great ease. She has great games, songs, and presentations that my son thoroughly enjoys and he doesn't even realize he is learning. I won't lie, I love the songs too!
When instructing at an adult level, Beate integrates cultural and historical aspects in to the lessons that really help to bring everything together. Understanding the history of the language, and how the culture differs from ours makes the lesson more thorough and will help tremendously in the transition from living in America to living in Germany.
Thank you for your kind words. Moving to another country is always a challenge, but it can be daunting when you have a family in which every person's goals, background, and level of potential immersion is different. Setting clear goals as a student is very helpful for a tutor. I hope your transition will be smooth and your stay in Germany very pleasant.
Without a doubt Beate is thinking about my son, what works for him as an individual. Only three weeks into our effort and I've see renewed energy and focus in my son to overcome lethergy with German.
So glad to hear from both of you that school performance is improving. It is also enjoyable to see genuine effort during our classes. By the end of the school year, German might be his favorite class. Way to go! Viel Spaß beim Lernen!
She has been great. My quiz grades after I started seeing her rose to a 90% and my test grades rose to 94%. We worked on things that I did not understand well on class, and we worked on conversational German getting to work on my diction and pronunciation. Really, really helpful. Made German class much more enjoyable.
I am glad to see you make progress in your college classes and enjoy seeing a positive attitude toward acquiring new language skills and learning about another culture.
Ms. Beate P. is an excellent tutor; she makes it easy to learn, easy to talk too, she's smart and shows me tricks and easy short cuts; plus she's fun to be tutored by. I recommend Ms. Beate P. to be a tutor to anyone.
It is nice to see a motivated student who is eager to learn and who applies strategies to solve problems. Good luck on your test! You should see a great improvement.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have coached my own children who scored in the mid 90's on the test. Let me help you achieve your potential by focusing on raising the important AFQT score or on areas other than AFQT in which you feel you need more specific help.
I have studied Prehistoric, Classical and Byzantine Archaeology as well as Ancient, Medieval, Byzantine, and European History, History of Art, Linguistics, Latin, and Ancient Greek and Modern Greek, in addition to eight semesters of Philosophy.
Although not a native English speaker, I write and speak at post-graduate level. I feel that being multilingual provides me the broadest possible base for a rich vocabulary, especially in etymology as far as Latin, Greek, German, and French roots are concerned. I have excelled in all reading tests and love to explain grammar and syntax. I do extremely well with visual-spatial learners.
During my Master's of Education classes, I took TESL 514 and TESL 530. I am fluent in four languages (English, German, French, and Greek) and have basic reading, writing or speaking skills in several other languages (Russian, Spanish, and Hebrew). In addition to my linguistic abilities, having lived in four continents and having traveled to dozens of countries gives me a very broad and diverse cultural background.
I have studied French for six years and while growing up in Europe, spent several weeks each year either in France (Normandie, Bretagne, Paris) or Switzerland (Valais, Chamonix), including one summer in a French program of the Paul Valery University in Montpellier (Languedoc/Roussillion). I also lived two years in francophone West-Africa (Nouakchott, Mauritania).
Being a global citizen, I have traveled to several dozen countries in four continents and lived in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the United States.
I am a native German speaker and who graduated from a high school in Germany and studied German as a Foreign Language at Athens University in Greece after completing my double Bachelor/Masters degree in History and Archaeology. I teach all levels of German, from hands-on immersion to academic/corporate level. I am familiar with German culture, history, art and music and have taught students with very diverse backgrounds of all ages.
Grammar is the framework of language that keeps the entire structure intact. I can help you look behind the words to discover the structure, be it in English, German, French, Latin or Greek.
I can also help with syntax and parsing.
I lived in Athens, Greece, for ten years and graduated from Athens University with a dual degree in History and Archaeology - an equivalent of a Master's degree. My language skills are functional both at a casual as well as an academic level.
I studied Latin for five years in high school and for two in college, and substitute teach for Latin teachers on a fairly regular basis.
I have made more Powerpoint presentations in my life than I can count and have taught multitudes of students how to create one for special class projects. I consider myself to be an expert.
I have taken a class in instructional technology that requires a professional level of Microsoft Word and I use the program with most of its tabs and features on a daily basis. I have successfully explained many features to both adults and students in a public school setting so many times that I consider myself to be an expert.
I consider myself an expert in reading, having taken a graduate course in content area reading while reading for information in more than four languages myself. There are techniques one can use to conquer a text on many different levels, and I love to teach these techniques and then help you practice them until they become second nature.
I feel very comfortable teaching SAT Reading, since I score near perfect myself on all reading tests, including TOEFL and Praxis I and II. I love to share the most recent reading techniques with my students that I have since learned during my latest graduate studies.
I have a masters in education K-12. These studies included classes in study skills. Most of my students in languages, social studies, and test prep require help with study skills as well as just switching to a different perspective or technique in order to understand the material, regardless of subject. I have been providing these types of lessons for over 25 years.
Considering the fact that the English language draws heavily from Latin, French, German, and Greek, you simply cannot do better than find a tutor who is also familiar with those languages. Once your child knows the origin of a word and/or observes patterns of spelling, it is much easier to make a connection and remember the word.
