My B.S. degree is from Towson University in English, Mass Communications, and Speech Communications with a concentration in writing. I have been tutoring for 21 years, and I am a certified teacher with endorsements in English, Journalism, and Speech grades 6-12. My 18 graduate credit hours include Special Education and English courses. I truly enjoy working one-on-one with students. I gear my programs on the individual student and his or her needs. I am experienced in SAT prep, test prep, study skills, language arts, reading, writing, some math with elementary to college-aged students. I have also worked with advanced, learning disabled, at-risk students as well as coaching debate and forensics at the high school level. Having three children myself, I feel I relate well to young people and look forward to contributing to successful learning in any area! Currently, I am a published poet, and have completed three children's books.

I charge an hour fee for any lessons cancelled or students that do not show up in less than the two hour window unless there is an emergency.
Dorothy has been tutoring my dyslexic grandson with great success. She quickly assessed where he needed help, and has provided assistance with his coursework and has boosted his reading skills. She is patient and kind, and has a good rapport with her students. We are very pleased.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Completing an ACT prep program with a student, I am versed in what is required for the test. I have practice tests and strategies to assist in understanding this standardized test to prepare for college admissions. Often students will take the ACT and the SAT, and use the higher score in the admissions process.
I am eligible for a provisional license in VA for Special Education K-12 as I am working on my Masters in the area. As a high school English teacher, I teach and differentiate learning for special needs students with ADD, ADHD, autism, aspergers, dysgraphia, dyslexia, and some behavioral problems. I have been successful in this area providing graphic organizers, study guides, after and before school tutoring.
I do have enough credits in Special Education with the Liberty University Masters program to be certified, and have worked with Special Education students including autistic, dyslexic, disgraphic, multiple reading and writing disabilites, ADHD, behavioral, and more. I have taught students with disabilities in my high school classroom and work with IEP's and 504's in the school system. I feel that I would be qualified to work with a autistic child.
I am a certified teacher who has worked with special needs students in an inclusion classroom setting. Additionally, I have completed 12 hours in special education master classes including how to accommodate dyslexic students. I am familiar with the strategies and interventions that would assist such a student.
I am already certified in VA for 6-12 in English, Mass Comm, and Journalism, and I am interested in tutoring students K-6. While going to school, I tutored students at elementary level in Charles City County, VA through two tutoring companies in Math and English programs during and after school 1-3rd and 7-8th grade "Reading Buddies and Math Buddies". I do feel qualified to assist K-6 students as a certified teacher with a current license.
I am a certified Secondary English teacher in VA with endorsements in Speech Communications and Journalism. I have worked with ESL/ESOL high school students in my classroom and adapted lesson plans to fit their needs in: basic language usage, grammar, writing, and communication skills. I would tailor any program to each individual student's needs by adding or omitting what the student's weakest areas are in the English language. I have also tutored an adult ESOL. Included in my program would be body language cues, as these are different from culture to culture. Acclimating to English would be a priority, as well as understanding the language.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication and a minor in Speech as well as a VA teaching license in English, Speech Communications and Journalism. I was the debate coach at my high school for two years; I assisted the previous coach for one year as a judge and helped with the team. I have experience in theater too. I feel this background qualifies me to teach public speaking, including my teaching endorsement in speech communications in VA.
I have taught SAT writing instruction for many years, as well as administered the test with the College Board. My background in English and writing makes me a string candidate for this.
I am a certified English teacher for grades 6-12, which makes me familiar with English SOL requirements. I am also experienced in test prep as I have done SAT and test taking strategies for 15 years in the school system and for private students. I also taught test prep and study skills at Sylvan Learning Center to middle and high school students as well as SAT test prep to high school students through University Instructors in group sessions.
