About Rochelle

I am a Special Education Teacher with fifteen years teaching experience, across all three levels of education. For the past nine years, I have taught high school courses including Active Physics, Algebra 1/Algebra 1 Part 1, pre-Algebra, Geometry, and Biology 1. I also have experience teaching reading, writing and math skills and concepts from grades K-8, and Basic Skills and academic strategies for student success. I am a former tutor with Huntington Learning Center. In addition, I am the current on-site administrator of educational testing for my high school's Special Education Eligibility process.

The specific value and joy of tutoring is that it is one-on-one. In a classroom, I cannot easily spot a student's struggles. However, in a one-one one situation, a student and I can better work together to identify what it is that impedes learning. I strongly believe in helping children learn how to turn overwhelming tasks into underwhelming chunks. Knowing that certain content or skills can be frightening and a great struggle, I am right there walking the path alongside him or her, sharing in the struggles and their victories, and helping the child to understand that the little successes do count, and are the building blocks to future success.

Fifteen years experience in dealing with a wide range of difficulties in learning math, both in the classroom and in tutoring.

Prior to becoming a teacher, I was a technical writer. I have experience in the classroom and in tutoring with supporting students in decoding, reading comprehension, and developing writing activities including individual paragraphs and multi-paragraph essays. I have also supported and taught the writing process across a variety of grade levels in preparation for student writing exams including state-required testing.

Certainly you will find me an experienced teacher, but you will also find me to be an individual who is caring, patient, understanding and able to find creative methods to help your student with his/her difficulties in learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

A majority of my student population struggle with ADD/ADHD. In one-on-one settings, I work with students to determine the best way to maintain focus, and strategies to help them return their attention to the tasks at hand. I also recognize the need to break down instructions and assignments into manageable chunks. My M.Ed is in Special Education.

Taught Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Part 1, Geometry and Active Physics in teamed and self-contained settings for the past 9 years.

Special Needs

My M.Ed is in Special Education. I have taught and tutored across multiple Special Education settings including Category B, where students are learning material significantly below age/grade level. I work with students with a variety of physical and learning disabilities, including traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and other conditions that result in multiple disabilities. One-on-one with students, I focus on strategies to help compensate for struggles and achieve success.
