I enjoy writing and reading good writing. I have taught English in high school and Community College and have written three books. I am also editor of a local newsletter. I have tutored English and Latin to high school students.
I have studied English and writing at university. I have also studied Journalism at the University if Missouri and received a minor. I have authored journals and newspaper articles and continue ti write daily. I love teaching, have an Ed.D in instructional design and educational environment and like to keep current (through the Association at which I am local chapter president) with teaching methods and technological applications. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia. I have worked on a newspaper, edited journals, and authored books. I have taught English in public and private schools at the secondary and Junior-college levels.
I worked as editor and proofreader for a city newspaper in Columbia, Maryland and for a consulting firm in D.C. I taught proper format and sentence construction at Georgetown University and to proposal and marketing writers at P.M.M. & Co., a big 10 management consulting firm. I have also taught grammar at Prince George's community college and at high schools in Missouri, my home town.
I Have taught GRE preparation and tutored many students in taking the writing and vocabulary portions of the test, both privately and for the public schools. I teach vocabulary understanding by using my knowledge of Latin and Spanish to identify cognates and decipher word meanings. I teach writing by genre using specific construction and clear and precise writing principles
I have taught literature at the High School level and studied literature in college. I can teach both English and American novelists, poets, and playwrights from the 18th to the current century. I am proficient with Augustan, Romantic, and modern English poets and Romantic and Modern American poets. I Have also published books of poetry.
Have been a proofreader for the Columbia Missourian newspaper and for McManis Associates, a consulting firm in D.C. Former Director of Publications for the Council for Postsecondary Accreditation in D.C. Now write my own books (2) and journal articles in education.
Have taught reading at high school level. Have tutored kids in reading at younger ages, as well. Read prolifically and write my own books. Have Ed.D. in education, so am familiar with wide variety of teaching strategies and techniques.
