About Ruth

I firmly believe in the limitless potential of each and every one of my students. I discovered during my high school years that determination, organization skills and just plain hard work can help each of us tap into that limitless potential, even though I grew up in a single parent household well below the poverty line. I am a National Merit Scholar with a BA in Economics and an MA in International Development, and I represented the U.S. as a Delegate to the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements in Istanbul, and later worked as a USAID contractor in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. In 2014, I earned a perfect score on the Verbal portion of the GRE as I prepared to return to graduate school. I have many hours experience tutoring students who are preparing for challenging standardized tests such as the SAT, GRE, ACT, SSAT and PSAT/NMSQT or who need a little extra boost to understand the material they are learning. I can help students from grade school to graduate school develop an effective and efficient approach to writing. During one-on-one tutoring sessions, my focus is on integrating the subject matter with the current interests of the student, making the learning process as interesting as possible so that the material will be easy to remember. I also coach students on time management and study planning. I earned my TOEFL teaching certification in October 2014, and have been invited to join the Global MBA Program at the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School in August 2016. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Economics

I studied Economics and International Development at American University in Washington, DC, writing my Masters thesis on the need for improved Environmental Impact Assessments conducted by the World Bank and International Development Banks. I went on to work for the United States Agency for International Development in the Office of Environment and Urban Development and later in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia.

ESL/ESOL

I have been working with both K-12 and adult English language learners from around the world, and have many hours of experience assisting students in improving their writing, speaking, and understanding of English. I earned my TESOL in October 2014 so that I am now certified to teach classes, but find that working with students one-on-one yields the most rapid progress.

GRE

I took the GRE in September 2014, and achieved a perfect score of 170 (99th percentile) on the GRE Verbal, the 71st percentile in GRE Quantitative and 80th percentile in GRE Writing. I am very familiar with the current format of the ever-evolving questions, and can help each student to focus on overcoming specific challenges and achieving an effective combination of accuracy and speed.

Public Speaking

As a high school student, I participated in Debate Club and Model United Nations. After completing my Masters degree, I joined the Toastmasters International Club to improve my public speaking skills. I was a member of the U.S. Delegation to Habitat II, the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, held in Istanbul in 1996. Not only can I help students to prepare and be comfortable when preparing for a public speaking engagement, I can help coach them on connecting with the audience, maintaining a good cadence and eye contact, and employing humor when appropriate to regain composure.

Study Skills

I tutor students from grade school to graduate school, and I have found that each and every person benefits from coaching on planning and time management. Although each individual learns differently and faces a wide variety of challenges when tackling a new subject, basic time management and study skills help the student to overcome those challenges one step at a time. Many students are struggling because they are overwhelmed by increasing amounts of homework as they grow older. While some teachers DO assign too much homework, each student can learn to approach every task more efficiently and productively. I help students to look ahead in their schedules and strategically organize their time, so that they can complete their homework assignments, and approach each test feeling fully prepared, well-rested and confident.

Extremely perceptive of what the student needs to improve and very effective in focusing on tasks that will address problem areas — I have been so impressed with Ruth's ability to focus on the trouble areas and teach my son how to overcome them. She can see what he doesn't and has the ability to instruct in such a way so that he recognizes what he is doing wrong and can fix it. Her work with him has been extremely productive. ...
