About Thomas

I am a full time computational physicist with the navy in aerothermochemistry. I have been tutoring students for many years and have a good understanding where the roadblocks are and the workarounds they are sometimes forced to employ. I use this stuff every day and can help explain difficult concepts from many different perspectives. I often find that students are much closer to their goals than they know, and usually need some carefully focused direction to get over their hurdles. I truly enjoy helping motivated students.

As a computational physicist I have been involved in some exciting navy research programs and hopefully my experiences will help motivate my students with the amazing potential applications of the subjects they're learning. I write compute code in various languages, which will help demonstrate difficult concepts to students in a way that their teachers can't usually duplicate.

I'll encourage students to reach out during the week when they have problems with a particular problem and need a little extra help. I'm happy to invest my own time by writing out solutions in great detail for better comprehension or by writing small programs to help a student understand the dynamics of an equation.

I have a doctor of science degree in computational physics (2008) from GWU and an MBA from GMU (2015).

Don't suffer. Call me and let me help you get past any bottlenecks and hurdles.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am a full-time physicist with an MBA and I am using modern computational techniques every day to solve algebra 1 problems.

Algebra 2

I am a full-time physicist with an MBA and I am using modern computational techniques every day to solve algebra 2 problems. I write computer code to visualize the various options for different techniques to gain further insights. I'd be happy to help share these capabilities with students to give them a competitive advantage.

Business

I have a doctor of science degree in computational physics (2008) and an MBA from GMU (2015). I would be happy to submit my transcripts upon request. Subjects include macro and micro economics, strategy, business statistics, marketing, organizational behavior, and more. I am currently working on business dynamics tasks using the Peter Senge and John Sterman as primary references.

Calculus

I am a full time physicist with the navy and I am using modern computational techniques every day to solve calculus related problems. I write computer code to visualize the various options for different techniques to gain further insights. I'd be happy to help share these capabilities with students to give them a competitive advantage.

Chemical Engineering

I have a Sc.D. in computational physics with a focus on aerothermochemistry. My dissertation dealt with multiphase reactions of aluminum, with heat transfer occurring vie conduction, convection, and radiation. The unique nature of aluminum combustion, particularly the products of combustion, required consideration of the phase-equilibria. In addition, in grad school I studied classical and statistical thermodynamics.

Chemistry

I am a full time computational physicist with the navy with a DSci degree and an MBA. I am using modern computational techniques every day to solve chemistry related problems.

Differential Equations

I got an A- in differential equations in my undergraduate studies. At graduate level I received an A in Applied Science for applications of ordinary differential equations, matrices and determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, systems of ordinary linear differential equations, Bessel and Legendre functions. Solutions also covered analytical solutions to partial differential equations, temporal and spatial, in Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinate systems. I also studied numerical methods to solve PDEs using finite element, finite difference, and finite volume methods.

Linear Algebra

I have a doctor of science degree from GWU (2008) in computational physics related to thermal science and fluid mechanics, with a specialty in combustion dynamics. I have tutored algebra students for over 30 years. I have applied linear algebra techniques in computational fluid dynamics problems, using vector notation and subscripted tensor notation.

MATLAB

I have been using MATLAB for about a decade, for work, grad school, and home business issues. I am familiar with the functions in many toolboxes. I have also used MATLAB to link with Excel in real time through the use on COM objects, have used the object oriented capacity, and developed many user interfaces. I would be happy to submit some of my programs as references.

Mechanical Engineering

I received a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from GWU in 1995. I also have a doctor of science degree from GWU in 2008. I have been employed as a mechanical engineer for over 30 years. I would be happy to submit my transcripts and work history.

Physics

I am a full time physicist with the navy and I am using modern computational techniques every day to solve physics and chemistry problems. I write computer code to visualize the various options for different techniques to gain further insights. I'd be happy to help share these capabilities with students to give them a competitive advantage.

Precalculus

I am a full time physicist with the navy and I am using precalc techniques every day to solve problems. I write computer code to visualize the various options for different techniques to gain further insights. I'd be happy to help share these capabilities with students to give them a competitive advantage.

Project Management

In addition to a doctor of science degree from GWU, I have an MBA from GMU focused on national defense acquisition. My work experience has been managing ACAT programs for the Navy, research projects for DARPA, and many others. I have training in project management software including Microsoft Project, statistical process tools like SPSS and R, and many others. I am a well versed in dynamic complexity of business dynamics approaches in the style Peter Senge in The Fifth Discipline.

Statistics

I am a full time physicist with an MBA and I am using modern computational techniques every day to solve statistics problems. I write computer code to visualize the various options for different techniques to gain further insights. I'd be happy to help share these capabilities with students to give them a competitive advantage.
