About Denise

I consider myself lucky to have been blessed to have gone into a second career that I absolutely love. I knew that once my own children were out of elementary school, that I wanted to be able to take my love of learning and my knowledge about how kids learn best into a school setting.

My passion has been teaching since my own children were little. When my oldest daughter was in Kindergarten I was concerned about her lack of phonemic awareness or the sounds that letters make. I became a walking encyclopedia on how children learn, especially in the area of reading. I was frustrated with the lack of knowledge that her teachers had about teaching reading and/or their lack of understanding about what to do to help her. They kept telling me to wait and see...it's too early to tell. All kids catch up by the time they are in fourth grade. This isn't true. I kept pushing because I knew that something wasn't right. When she came home from school one day and asked me, "Why can't I read like the other kids in my class," I started seeking help on my own. My daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia.

I have a wealth of knowledge about teaching kids how to become successful readers. Most of all I help kids to learn to love reading. I have been trained in working with students with dyslexia and decoding deficits. Working with students who lack fluency and and comprehension skills is also one of my strengths as a teacher. I have training in current teaching methods in reading. I have worked with students who are reading two years below grade level. All of my students make marked improvement in their reading levels and/or fluency.

I have been working for 10 years as a teacher in Fairfax County. As a third grade teacher, my students outperform other third grade classrooms throughout the county even though I work with high need students. In the area of mathematics, I am able to change a student's attitude about math to the point where they love math because I make it fun. Math today is so much more than just learning how to solve the problem. Rather, it is about understanding the problem and being able to think critically about how to get to the solution. It isn't just about the algorithm. This is done through a workshop model which includes project based and hands on tasks, not simply paper/pencil.

My students love doing phonics and word work with me because it is fun. There are numerous methods for teaching phonics, but by far, the best way to teach phonics is systematically. This means moving children through a planned sequence of skills rather than teaching particular aspects of phonics as they are encountered in texts. Systematic instruction can focus on synthetic phonics (decoding words by translating letters into sounds and then blending them), analytic phonics (identifying whole words then parsing out letter-sound connections), analogy phonics (using familiar parts of words to discover new words), phonics through spelling (using sound-letter connections to write words) and/or phonics in context (combining sound-letter connections with context clues to decode new words). Regardless of the specific method used what is most important in systematic instruction is that there is a deliberate and sequential focus on building and using the relationship between sounds and letter symbols to help readers decode new words.

For the past nine years, I have tutored students at my school on Saturday and after school during preparation for SOLs. Students are disappointed when it is over. Their comments are usually to the effect, that they didn't realizing that getting extra help can be so much fun!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
