As a former high school English teacher, and a parent of a 2011 graduate of Fairfax County Public Schools, I'm ready to help you improve your grades in English class. I am very familiar with FCPS curricula. My son had an IEP and needed help throughout his school career. I was his 'study buddy' for many years, and am quite familiar with Blackboard to access assignments. I understand many special learning needs and difficulties. Mrs Jane L. is my son's tutor. She is great and very professional. My son (7th grader) really likes to study with her. I highly recommend Mrs Jane L to anyone who needs an English tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a master's degree in Education from the University of Virginia. I am currently tutoring a third grade student at Holy Spirit school in Burke, VA. I am trained to recognize learning disabilities in reading and can appropriately partially remediate visual-motor difficulties with reading aids, and also refer parents to have the child tested for disabilties. I can refer parents to testing if I see indications that the child is transposing letters or words, which may signal dyslexia. I have tutored children in phonics instruction using picture-word match and filling in the correct letter to match the picture, using sing-a-long and read-a-long rhymes, highlighting words that have the same ending/beginning sound; and so on.
I have a Master's degree in Education from the University of Virginia. I am tutoring elementary students now. I've taught high school. In addition, my son had an IEP and was in study skills courses, so I am well versed in study skills. Techniques include breaking down assignments into manageable parts; reading short sections of longer passages and having the student write down a few words on the main idea or fact; working with flashcards to test memory on vocabulary, etc.
