Bio

I started reading at the age of 3 and haven’t stopped since. My first love was a love of stories. I spent most of my childhood with my nose buried in a book. I also have a penchant for reading grammar books and browsing through dictionaries for fun. I started taking French at the age of 4 and as I grew up I became fascinated with words, grammar, and language.

My first tutoring job started when I was 10. A friend of the family asked me to teach her kindergartner how to tell time. In no time, I realized I had a knack for explaining things. I’ve since tutored English (writing, proofreading, reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, literature, etc.), K-8 math/reading/writing/science, Biology, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Calculus I, Calculus II, and ASL (American Sign Language). To date, I have 15+ years of tutoring experience.

After I graduated college with a B.A. in English, I pursued an A.A. in Sign Language Interpreting. I've been interpreting professionally for 7 years and have 3 years of experience tutoring ASL to both small groups of 2-8 students and individually. I am pre-certified through RID and have a III/II on the VQAS (Virginia Quality Assurance Screening). I’m available for ASL tutoring, fingerspelling practice, and conversational ASL practice.

Additionally, I have experience tutoring English to the Deaf in one-on-one situations. If you are a Deaf student looking for English tutoring without the intermediary interpreter, feel free to contact me.

Hard of Hearing

In addition to ASL tutoring, I am also available for fingerspelling practice, Deaf culture questions, conversation practice, as well as in-depth focus on specific grammar structures such as signer's perspective, classifiers, role shifting, etc. If you are a Deaf individual and are looking for English tutoring, having a tutor that can sign can be a great benefit for clarity and understanding. I can help with understanding vocabulary, overlap between English and ASL, idioms, and grammar structures in English.
