Bio

My name is Sogand, I’m a senior studying computer science at George Washington University. When I was at high school, I realized that I love teaching to others, because I believe in a community we all need to help each other to learn different subjects and develop in academic or non-academic fields. When defining success, I don’t look at it from an individualistic perspective, however, I see it in sharing and helping others. This is my motivation for being a tutor. I believe learning a...

I believe learning a subject is not the same as memorizing it, and students need to feel a connection to what they’re studying in order to really understand it. This connection is possible when the teacher or the tutor uses examples, engages the students, and makes learning fun where the students feel their improvement, and use it as a motivation to do better.
I started tutoring in high school by tutoring math to other students. I have 1-year experience tutoring Calculus and Algebra which were my strongest subjects in high school. I tutor different levels of Algebra and calculus. I started studying Computer Science in 2015, where I found my real passion, which is creating and developing tools to solve real-world problems. My first language is Java, which I have experience tutoring for a semester. I am also getting my minor in psychology, and have taken general, social, cognitive, and Developmental Psychology, to study human behavior patterns, cognition, and development. Farsi is my native language, and I have experience teaching it to young children for a year.

In order to teach a specific object, I first make sure the student is comfortable with the whole picture and then try to find the root of the confusion. I use examples and activities to make sure the student is learning, rather than just listening. I always read about the subject before the session start, in order to be more prepared for tutoring the students. I can travel to the student’s place, any libraries, and also have my own place for tutoring. I am very flexible and always keep my communication going with the parents to make sure they are satisfied.
