About Sharon

I am a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and will be attending George Mason University (GMU) this fall to study computer science. I love teaching kids math and computer science. I have been tutoring elementary, middle, and high school kids in math for the past 3 years.

I love working with kids to improve their skills in math and computer science. One of my goals is to get kids excited about math and learn how useful it can be in the real world (using word problems). I also believe it is important to fully grasp the basic concepts before moving on to more advanced topics.

I took Algebra 2/Trig, Precalculus, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics at TJ and received high A's in all of those classes. I also have experience coding in Java, Python, HTML, and MATLAB.

Since the summer before my junior year of high school, I have been assisting with research at the Neural Engineering Lab at GMU. My mentor invited to give a lecture to her graduate-level neural engineering class on data analysis. I have also mentored a new member of the lab, which involved teaching him MATLAB, the main programming language used in the lab.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took Algebra 1 in middle school and higher level math in high school. Currently I am taking Calculus 3 in college.

Computer Programming

I started programming in middle school, when I taught myself HTML and created a simple web page in a week. I have taken 5 computer science classes in high school and received high A's in all of them: Foundations of Computer Science (Java), AP Computer Science (Java), Artificial Intelligence (Python), Mobile App Development (Java and HTML), and Web App Development (HTML, JavaScript, CSS). I received a 5 on my AP Computer Science exam. I also taught myself MATLAB the summer after my sophomore year of high school and have programmed Graphical User Interfaces for neuronal data analysis in the Neural Engineering Lab at George Mason University. I have been acknowledged in a research paper for my help with data analysis. I will be starting college at GMU this fall and majoring in computer science. I love programming and especially enjoy teaching it to others.

Computer Science

I developed a passion for computer science after my freshman year of high school, when I was introduced to Java programming and was able to pick up on the material quickly and design a game by the end of the summer. I will be starting college at GMU this fall and majoring in computer science. I love programming and especially enjoy teaching it to others. I have been working in the Neural Engineering Lab at GMU for more than 2 years now, and have had experience training many new lab members in MATLAB programming.

MATLAB

I taught myself MATLAB two summers ago before I started my junior year of high school. I have been using my MATLAB skills to assist with research in the Neural Engineering Lab at George Mason University for more than 2 years now. My mentor is Dr. Nathalia Peixoto, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Neuroscience. I have been acknowledged in a research paper for my help with data analysis using MATLAB. I have created multiple Graphical User Interfaces that has made data analysis of neuronal spike data much more efficient. I also mentored a new lab member by teaching him MATLAB and now he has become an expert and is even able to teach others MATLAB. I love programming and enjoy teaching it to others.
