Writing: Personal essays can be daunting when you don't know where to begin. I've worked with dozens of juniors and seniors as they prepare to apply to colleges. I've helped students get into Ivy leagues and land scholarships. I do not write the essays for students. I give thoughtful, helpful guidance that shows how to begin to find a topic, how to structure the essay, and how it might best be written so that it stands out. Most students, believe it or not, find that they like writing for the first time when we brainstorm and make decisions together.
Art portfolios: I've been a professional artist for 30 years. I've published 25 picture books, and won several national awards. But these are not my best qualifications for tutoring and evaluating portfolios. My own art career helps, but being able to connect and communicate is much more important. I know exactly how to clarify art goals and show you how to expand your vision to include more of who you are as an artist.
I love to paint and to teach. If you are just a beginner or an artist in mid-career, I can help you develop your painting and drawing so that it allows you to feel that you are in charge of the final product. I have probably had many of your experiences already, and can guide you around being stuck, struggling with a problem, or even re-imagining your vision.

Janet is patient, very knowledgeable and highly trained. She has a great studio and wonderful assortment of supplies with which she is very generous. Janet listens to the student to find out what he/she perceives he needs, has on-point suggestions and exercises to do right away so you are doing doing doing right away. She is a very friendly person and she is easy to be with. Great atmosphere for learning!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
With a master's degree in Painting, and several years teaching fine arts, I am certainly qualified to instruct drawing classes. I can teach shading, texture, life drawing, perspective, color theory and abstract drawing.
I have 24 books published, am an excellent editor and have worked with professional writers for 13 years. Their books went on to be published with my corrections and ideas.
I am a patient and thorough teacher who believes that good penmanship (printing as well as cursive) has many advantages. It allows the writer to easily scan their writing for main ideas and points. Writing quickly and legibly can increase grades when writing prompts are timed. I also teach calligraphy.
I've been teaching painting for four years, have an MFA in teaching, and an undergrad degree in Fine Arts as well. I have helped students prepare their portfolios for art colleges, and taught beginners to explore their options as they delve into the art world. I will meet you where you are in your art exploration, and guide you toward new and exciting avenues of expression.
I've worked with college-bound students for 5 years, helping them craft their essays for admission. I have also published 25 books (for children, just to be clear!)
I've published 25 books. Okay, they are all for children, but still ... my editing skills are top notch!
