I have a background in working with students with learning disabilities and enjoy working with reluctant students. I want to help students find ways to succeed that work for them and I help kids and families think outside the box to develop learning and study skills that will help them for years to come.
My tutoring experience started in high school volunteering at an after-school program for underprivileged families. During high school and college I also worked with refugee students learning English and reading skills. I have also helped tutor classmates in college for specific classes and general writing skills. Working with students in the after school program and with pre-literate refugee students was highly rewarding and challenging. In both of these situations I worked with students with learning disabilities. I like to use a variety of learning methods to work with a variety of learning styles. I find that having fun is an important part of learning, so I use mnemonics, pop culture, and games to help students absorb information and learn skills.
I have a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Mary Washington, where I graduated with a 3.5+ GPA and made the Dean's List multiple semesters. I also have a Master's degree in Public Policy from George Mason University, where I also graduated with a 3.5+ GPA. I have worked for a non-profit patient advocacy group and as an independent contractor. I deeply enjoy working with children and families and love to share my own joy in learning.

Sociology,

Sociology

I have a B.A. in sociology from the University of Mary Washington. I continued to use my sociology background in my graduate degree in public policy through my focus on education policy and poverty. Depending on the needs of the student, I would begin tutoring in this subject by ensuring that they had a foundation in sociological theory including Durkheim, Marx, Weber, Simmel, ect. I would continue with more recent approaches, such as feminist theory, post-colonial theory, and grounded theory.

Test Preparation

SOL,

SOL

All of my tutoring has been done in VA public school systems, which means extensive experience with the Standards of Learning tests. I also attended VA public schools myself and was one of the first students to take the SOL tests when they were first established. I can tell you how the tests have change over the years, what the weaknesses of the tests are for different ages, and how the SOLs are scored (for most subjects/grades a passing score is around 50%), but that wouldn't fit in this space. Here is the first and last thing I tell kids that I am working with about the SOL tests: First answer the questions you know, then come back and answer the questions you are less sure about. If you can eliminate two out of the four choices, you should answer that question. Remember to breathe, read all the instructions and make sure to erase any mistakes really cleanly. Good luck; I know you know this stuff!
