University of North Carolina (Mathematics)
My name is Catie, and I am a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Decision Science. I have a passion for teaching students of all ages and have served as a TA for 2 years. I believe in the true definition of teaching, which is to cause to learn. Learning new things should be an interesting and involved process for progress to be made.
I began tutoring in high school, volunteering as a reading and writing tutor for 1st graders. Since then I have had experience tutoring students at my high school in a variety of subjects, including Chemistry, Math, Physics and English. At UNC I work as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for the Physics and Astronomy Department and have taken a pedagogy class to refine my teaching style for mathematics and science.
My academic career has been very successful and I have received various awards and recognition including:
2013 Presidential Scholar Award
2013 National Merit Commended Scholar
2013 AP Scholar with Distinction (9 AP Exams with score of 4 or 5)
2013 Presidential AP Scholar
2012 AP Scholar with Honors (4 AP Exams with score of 4 or 5)
Graduated with 29 college course hours from AP exams
SAT Score: 2160, with 1560/1600
ACT Score: 33
ACT Math, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus, SAT Math, Calculus, Statistics, Probability

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My ACT math score was 33.
I am qualified to tutor ACT Reading because in HS, I helped several of my friends prepare for this part of the exam, and they did well. In addition, I tutored a high school student in this subject several years ago, and they did very well. I work on carefully reading a section and then discussing what it means, the purpose, and other relevant questions. Doing so helps the student start thinking about it while reading, increasing their comprehension and speed, and thus their score.
I received an A in Algebra 1
I received an A in Algebra 2.
I received an A- in calculus and have since further refined those math skills.
I earned a 1560 in the math/verbal section and only missed 1 question on the SAT math section.
