About Susan

Hello! I am a language enthusiast. I enjoy my native language-English and like teaching grammar, writing and vocabulary. I like to teach 10-14 year old students because they are just moving to a new plateau of expression from the basics of elementary school to the more nuanced expressions required in junior high. I also teach high school students for PSAT and SAT.
I studied linguistics (with a focus on ESL) and majored in Japanese language at Georgetown University. I have a teaching certificate for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I also have a masters degree in international business. I have over 8 years of direct experience tutoring ESL to individuals or in group settings. I know what it feels like to be a student learning another language and trying to master it in another land because I attended university in Tokyo Japan for 6 years and became proficient in Japanese. I am a native English speaker and have studied 5 foreign languages (Spanish, French, Korean, Chinese and Japanese).

I think students will appreciate my teaching style because I am culturally sensitive and I use many different approaches to help the student understand and absorb the content. I also tailor my teaching style depending on the student's ability and preference for learning and use interactive situational exercises.

I welcome students to contact me and I will provide more information and arrange for a meeting.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I studied linguistics and ESL as a minor in college and have 8 years of practical experience teaching both individuals and groups. I customize my lessons depending on the needs of the student and try to incorporate a holistic method so that all skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) are developed. I am comfortable teaching all levels of students. I enjoy teaching young children, teenagers, college students and adults.

Grammar

As a student of many languages, I first had to understand my native language-English so that I could learn additional languages. I am very knowledgeable of the intricacies of grammar and can explain the different rules, terminology and exceptions. I strive to give examples that make sense and try to give examples which are memorable so the student can recall when they run across a situation in which they have to remember the rule (i.e. May I, Can I go to the bathroom).

Japanese

I majored in Japanese language at Georgetown University and lived in Tokyo for six years after graduation. During that time, I completed my masters degree at a Japanese university and also worked at a Japanese company. I am fluent in reading, writing and speaking and can easily convey concepts to English speakers in terms that they can understand. I love the language and culture and convey the enthusiasm in my lessons.

Proofreading

I am a person who pays extreme attention to detail and have proofread numerous kinds of documents from press releases, annual reports, dissertations, resumes and so on.
I am particularly familiar with business, high tech and linguistics. However, I read frequently and feel comfortable correcting papers in m any other subject areas.

Reading

As a student of languages, including my own native English, I am able to dissect the language and pull out the important points. I can teach students techniques to improve reading comprehension and help them learn how to break down the passages into manageable parts. I am an interactive and patient teacher and welcome the opportunity to tutor students who need techniques to improve reading ability.

TOEFL

I have tutored over 50 students in TOEFL. The test focuses on all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) and I give the student an assessment test. I work in a systematic manner to improve the score in each section. I spend a lot of time teaching how to take notes for the listening section and how teaching how to structure thoughts in outline form for the speaking section. I also teach SAT and PSAT so many of the concepts are also taught in TOEFL.

Writing

I assist native speakers and non-native speakers in making their writing easy to understand and meaningful. I focus on appropriate level grammar and how to choose words. I often have the students speak aloud first and then write down their thoughts. I have tutored 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th graders in Fairfax County and teach to the Standards of Learning (SOL).
When I work with non-native speakers, I can explain grammar well and why you use one pattern versus another pattern.
