Determination, organization skills and just plain hard work can help you tap into your potential. I firmly believe in the limitless potential of each and every one of my students. It does not matter how many times you have tried and fallen short before. Determination, organization skills and just plain hard work can help you tap into your potential. Preparing for a Standardized Test like the GRE, SAT, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, or ISEE can be intimidating, but I can help you develop the individualized strategies you need in just a few sessions.
I'm happy to coach my students on both the strategies and the mindset they need to bring with them on test day. Since time management tends to be the biggest challenge for most of us, I share a wide variety of methods that have helped my students develop an effective and efficient approach to study planning. Each of us has different strengths and challenges, so it is important to identify these and test a range of approaches in order for each student to find what works best. Every student receives SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Limited) goals to work on between sessions, and meeting these benchmarks regularly gets them to the primary objective: Confidence!
Here's a little bit about my experience with standardized testing: Using well-honed strategies to score high on the PSAT, I earned a full-tuition National Merit Scholarship to study Economics and International Studies at American University. In 2014, I took the GRE a second time and earned a 328/340 (with a perfect score on the Verbal portion).

As a high school student, I participated in Debate Club and Model United Nations. After completing my Masters degree, I joined the Toastmasters International Club to improve my public speaking skills. I was a member of the U.S. Delegation to Habitat II, the Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, held in Istanbul in 1996. Not only can I help students to prepare and be comfortable when preparing for a public speaking engagement, I can help coach them on connecting with the audience, maintaining a good cadence and eye contact, and employing humor when appropriate to regain composure.

I tutor students from grade school to graduate school, and I have found that each and every person benefits from coaching on planning and time management. Although each individual learns differently and faces a wide variety of challenges when tackling a new subject, basic time management and study skills help the student to overcome those challenges one step at a time. Many students are struggling because they are overwhelmed by increasing amounts of homework as they grow older. While some teachers DO assign too much homework, each student can learn to approach every task more efficiently and productively. I help students to look ahead in their schedules and strategically organize their time, so that they can complete their homework assignments, and approach each test feeling fully prepared, well-rested and confident.

Kind, patient tutor with expert knowledge

Ruth has been working with my daughter for several sessions and her test scores have improved dramatically as a result. She has a kind, patient approach that takes the pressure away from learning while understanding the expectations of the tests. We would highly recommend Ruth!

Hit the ground running

Ruth suggested that my daughter take a pre-test before the first tutoring session. Using the results of the test, she was able to identify my daughter’s strength and weaknesses and start working right away on addressing those weaknesses. They had a great session - my daughter was very comfortable with Ruth’s teaching style and personality. We are going to schedule more sessions with her for sure.

Patient tutor with good explanations

I took GRE verbal class with Ruth and she was soo helpful in explaining each and every query with patience. She explains what’s the text meaning and what goes in well in those text completions/sentence completions. Explained reading comprehensions too. She is a very good tutor and I would recommend her.

Extremely knowledgeable and very patient

English honors for my son who is in 10th grade. He really enjoyed his sessions with Ms. Ruth. She was very punctual on her arrival time and was very pleasant. She applied some strategies on how to tackle his assignment and my son thought that it was extremely helpful.

Terrific Tutor!

Ruth has worked with my daughter for two sessions on Algebra 2. My child was struggling with the concepts. After 2 sessions with Ruth she is able to complete the assignments and now has a better understanding of the subject. Look forward to continuing to work with Ruth.

Great working with Ruth

She was knowledgeable, personable and gave strong advice for all sections of the test. And also she talked not only about the material itself, but how the GRE questions themselves are set up to test for each kind of knowledge.

Truly amazing with a wealth of knowledge.

Ruth is one of the most patient and knowledgeable tutors I have ever been able to work with. Her assistance as well as knowledge are invaluable. Ruth was super easy to speak with, was not judgmental of my situation as well as provided explanations that were easy to understand and ultimately helped me get through my assignment with a new level confidence and a greater understanding of the course material. I truly do recommend Ruth to anyone who is in need of a tutor.
