In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For eleven weeks, I was a long-term substitute teacher in middle school self-contained and team-taught Special Education (LD/ED) classrooms which included students with ADD/ADHD. I offered structure, high expectations, and genuine interest in students as individuals, to make learning relevant and engaging. I have the proven ability to help students with ADD/ADHD improve their focus, self-motivation, and self-esteem to enhance their learning.
For eleven weeks, I was a long-term substitute teacher in middle school self-contained Special Education (LD/ED) classrooms which included students with Aspergers. I offered clear structure, high expectations, emotional and social modeling and support, and strong, genuine interest in students as individuals. My goal for students with Aspergers--as for all students--has been to discover each person's unique interests, goals, and combination of cognitive, social, and emotional skills, and to build upon them to create and deliver an effective, engaging curriculum and lessons. I also have experience volunteering as a mentor in a social club for young adults with Aspergers.
I have extensive adult education and secondary school age teaching experience. I have taught adult ESOL for many years, have substitute taught in secondary schools, and I currently am working toward certification in Secondary School English. I earned a 3.9 GPA in graduate school and graduated from Brown University with a degree in History. I can help your family member or you achieve academic success using proven study skills techniques.
