I have tutored students in Math (Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Trigonometry) and Physics for several years now. I greatly enjoy the feeling of seeing the "light bulb" come on when I am able to clarify concepts for students.

I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Aeronautical Engineering. I have done lots and lots of math and science in my educational pursuits as well as professionally. I also have 3 adult children who I assisted in their academics.

I like to first focus on understanding the concepts. Too often, students understand the mechanics of solving the problems but not the physical laws (like Newton's laws) behind them. Once the student has a solid foundation, it's time to do problems - lots of them. I simply gently guide the student, as necessary, by asking leading questions. This approach is successful with most students.

Life is short. I think students of all ages enjoy a light-hearted approach to difficult concepts. Injection of humor helps keep tension low and facilitates progress.

I use an iPad Pro (the LARGE one!) and MS OneNote to record my notes for each session. Those notes are available to the student in real time. Detailed, colorful notes solving problems and explaining concepts - how great is that?

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored dozens of students in Algebra 1 for the past several years. However, its still fun for me to help students with these concepts. I also have a good supply of old problems to draw on for my students.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have tutored literally dozens of students successfully in Algebra over the last several years. I quite enjoy the topic in all of its varied applications and nuances. As with my other domains, I feel that conceptual knowledge is critical as it enables problem solving, the most important part of any technical pursuit.
Calculus,

Calculus

I really LOVE calculus! It's so challenging, complex, and so fundamental to all areas of analysis in real life. I have taken many courses in various areas of calculus and tutored several students successfully in this area of math. I look forward to working with you in the wonderful world of calculus!
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is so different from the other topics. It is precise and objective, like the others. However, it requires spatial intelligence which can trip up the uninitiated. I enjoy the process of understanding the shapes and diagrams, and always seeing the proverbial "light bulb" come on during the tutoring process.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is where it finally gets fun! Just short of the most fun math -- Calculus. I enjoy tutoring this because I focus on showing the students how these concepts will be leveraged in Calculus. Its fun and interesting.

Knowledgeable, confidence building and relatable tutor

Carl worked with my daughter for 2 sessions, and we will go to him again if she needs more help, & really helped her understand what they worked on in Algebra 2 & Physics. She came home happy and excited about what she learned with him. I really think these sessions helped her and she will probably reach out again in the near future with exams. Totally worth the money!

Amazing mathematician and even better tutor! Best tutor I have ever had!

I am very confident to say that Carl is one of the best tutors I have ever had. He tutored me in Differential Calculus, which I took at NOVA Community College in order to receive the corresponding credits for MATH 1226 at Virginia Tech (which is one of the highest level, required engineering math courses offered there). While Carl is very calm and easygoing, he is extraordinarily helpful. His patient and relaxed manner was a seamless compliment to the admittedly wound-up and anxious way that I generally approach mathematics. He is able to explain practically any problem in multiple different ways, which in my opinion constitutes a very talented mathematician and tutor. Additionally, he is very accommodating with tutoring hours and locations. I would highly recommend him to anyone taking—and possibly struggling—with mathematics on any level. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Carl this summer.

Awesome!

Carl could not have been better. He was punctual, professional, knowledgeable and a very nice gentleman. As my son said, Carl was all anyone could want from a tutor. We will definitely use Carl again the next time my son needs math help.

Very patient and thorough

Carl has been a great help to our son in finding the small errors and oversights that were holding his grades back a bit. Carl's humor and small scale, fun athletic challenges regarding test scores have been motivational as well.
