About John

I been teaching German and ESL since 1986. I am a former Fairfax county German Teacher and presently an adjunct ESL and German Instructor at Northern Virginia Community College. I have tutored many students over the years.

I love teaching German and ESL at all levels and to all age groups (PK-Adult)) My philosophy is that all children and adults should have fun while learning a language. I am very eclectic in approach. I use TPR, Songs, stories, videos, and the internet to teach the language.

I can also help in doing homework or getting ready for a test!!!!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have at least 6 years of private 1:1 ESL experience. I have gained an understanding of what it is to teach 1:1. It is very different from teaching large groups. You have to build a trust with the student. This means the student has to become comfortable with you and your teaching style.

I presently teach ESL at Northern Virginia Community College in the Continuing Education program. Previously, I have taught ESL at Berlitz, Fairfax County Adult Education, and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte NC.

Public Speaking

I am a former judge, assistant coach, and participate in Oratory, Extemporaneous speaking, and 2 man and 4 man Debate in and after High School. I have been a judge and assistant coach at the High School and College Level for many years.

I can help any student become a better speaker!!! I am patient and I am willing to listen and provide advice to anyone who needs help giving Speeches.

An Excellent and Patient Teacher

John is a very good instructor and makes the lessons fun yet challenging. He is very easy to work with and adds the German flair that only comes with a real teacher. Highly recommended, A+, Wundebar!
