I meet students where they are, and leverage off tried and true precepts collected by great artists and designers over time. That so, students become equipt with solid foundational skills with which to develop their own visual literacy. One of the great joys of teaching is to see the look of accomplishment of the face of each student as she or he overcomes any trepidation of learning something new.
Having studied fine art and commercial art in Chicago, and computer graphics in San Diego, has gained me access to some of the most established and innovative creative minds in the the visual arts. Over the decades, I have taught traditional drawing and painting, and digital graphic art, on the West Coast and in Central Virginia, in academic, corporate, and private learning environments.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been an artist all my life, and a working artist for all my adult life. I am sixty years of age now. I studied drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Academy of Art (Chicago) and many others. I teach drawing at the University of Virginia (SCPS), and many others.
I have been a full time graphic designer for 30 years. I have taught in the degree program at Piedmont Virginia Community College, for private students, and for many children's summer art camps. I use historic and contemporary references to communicate principles of good design.
I studied painting with Nelson Shanks, (Studio Incamminati), and many others in Chicago and Central Virginia. I have taught painting at Piedmont Virginia Community College, and in many other public and private settings. I use tradition methods to communicate the fundamentals of representational painting.
