About Kathryn

Bio

I have Bachelor’s degrees in both Math and Studio Art and a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics. While in grad school, I worked for the Math Department as a teaching assistant, tutor, and grader. I currently work part time as a data analyst while also homeschooling my elementary school aged children, so I am also very comfortable teaching young children.

I currently work part time as a data analyst while also homeschooling my elementary school aged children, so I am also very comfortable teaching young children.

When tutoring and helping with homework, I always try to take an approach that will lead a student to discover the answer on their own. My focus is on helping students to gain knowledge and understanding, not to give answers that will lead to a good grade on one assignment and be of no further benefit. Math does not have to be hard! Sometimes it just needs to be explained in a different way. I always love getting to see the moment when a student suddenly understands a concept that used to be confusing. Those kinds of rewarding moments are the reason I continue to pursue tutoring and a teaching career.

Outside of Math, I still love to do art and have always maintained my skills as a hobby. My favorite mediums are oil, pastel, charcoal, pencil, and pen & ink.

If you are looking for a tutor, mentor, or coach in any of these areas, I would love to hear from you!

Drawing

I began taking art lessons when I was in middle school, and I loved it! I was lucky enough to attend a high school that had a great art department, and there I got to take several art classes starting with beginning art and including pottery, drawing, painting, and AP Studio Art. I loved the experience so much that I decided to take two majors in college so that I could continue to study both Art and other subjects. The courses I took in college included drawing, printmaking, painting, and design. I also had the opportunity to study in Italy during two summers during which I focused on drawing and painting with pastels and studying Italian Renaissance Art History. I would love to help you learn to draw! I am happy to submit samples of my work to anyone who would like to see them, so just contact me if you're interested!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is the foundation of all upper level Math, and a thorough understanding of this subject is essential to future success! Unfortunately, in today's crowded classrooms, many students just don't get the help and one-on-one attention that is needed. They often end up discouraged and just give up on Math altogether. I can help! Not everyone learns in the same way; sometimes things just need to be explained in a different way or practiced a little more, and math can be easy and fun!

Strategic style.

During ther first session, Kathryn assessed my daughter on her math skills; strengths and weaknesses. Kathryn then focused on the areas in which my daughter needed the most attention. She was responsive to emails, text messages, and phone calls, and flexible on tutoring days and times. I would definitely recommend her.
