Hi! I am Tomás. I have been interested and involved with environmental studies regarding wildlife, conservation, and biology from a very young age. While at the University of New Hampshire, I focused on wildlife and conservation biology and aspects of anthropology. During that time I assisted in teaching an undergraduate class about ecology and evolution, often taking students on field trips and doing hands on activities exploring the natural world. I also spent six months in Australia at James Cook University, studying both marine and rainforest ecosystems. While there, I dove and snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, hiked through the rainforests in Northern Queensland, spent time rehabilitating kangaroos, wombats, and wallabies, and researched coral reef fish. After graduating, I spent a summer working in upstate New York as a field biologist focusing on bats, birds, deer, and small mammals. Recently, I completed my master’s thesis at Virginia Tech, studying the effects a fungal disease has had on bats across New York. There I learned the importance of science communication and have actively engaged in workshops, presentations, and teaching seminars to promote science to people of all ages.

I try to bring my passion for travel, wildlife conservation, and education to my tutoring approach, and do everything I can to inspire curiosity through teaching. My experiences have led me to work with students of all ages. During the summers I lead National Geographic Student Expeditions teaching both middle school and high school students on all things science, including: biology, ecology, wildlife conservation, climate and geology. I believe the best way to learn is through hands on exercises and finding ways to relate your interests, likes, and thoughts to the subject. I shape my teaching to the interests of each individual I tutor and work with everybody to achieve their goals.

I am easy to reach and will always respond quickly. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or schedule a lesson!

In my profession and graduate studies I have given 5+ presentations to wildlife professionals on several topics including threatened and endangered bat species, statistics, and population modeling. I have also completed a course in Communicating science, which taught me the power to efficiently communicate science to the public. With this I have lead workshops and given presentations to lay audiences of all ages about my research. I have also lead several expeditions in which I teach about zoology, ecology, and wildlife conservation to middle and high school students.

Botany,

Botany

I have completed courses in Dendrology of all New England plants and shrubs. The course was spent identifying trees and shrubs in all seasons. Moreover, through my studies and work I have had to inventory plant species across Eastern United States for habitat management of wildlife species.
Zoology,

Zoology

Within both my coursework and profession I need to have a strong understanding of zoology. Especially in terms of animal behaviour and physiology. I have had courses in animal behaviour, mammology, ecology and evolution, and vertebrate ecology which all involve zoological practices. In my profession I need to utilize these same practical skills to manage wildlife populations.
