Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

Phonics is the identification of letters and the sounds they make. Students normally master most phonetic sounds in early elementary, however, there are some who fall through the cracks and may need remediation for more difficult combinations (i.e., ph = f sound and double consonants primarily take on the second consonant sound). Lessons in phonics are geared towards assisting students properly pronounce words, which helps to build fluency when reading. Onset and ending word sounds are important in achieving this goal.

Reading

Reading includes reading strategies that will enhance comprehension, drawing/art for vocabulary, highlighting text/text features, skim n' scan, eliminating answer choices, and read alouds, all of which improves comprehension and test scores.

Focus is also placed on reading fluency (flow of reading) and vocabulary, as they are important features in comprehension. Fluency is checked at the beginning and end of tutoring period.

Study Skills

Study Skills is teaching students the metacognitive process of how they best learn. There are various learning styles and when a student (and teacher) taps into the best manner for learning and retention of material, academic success is achieved. Observation of the student's skills, interests, and overall academic abilities play a major role in determining his or her learning style. Once identified, lessons are formulated to target the style of learning (i.e., auditory, manual, visual, etc.).
