I would love to help with your tutoring needs!
I specialize in working with elementary and middle school students in all subjects and high school students needing help in Algebra I, Geometry, writing, and basic study skills. I received my Bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in 2005 and began tutoring in 2012. In 2014, I began teaching with Prince William County as a middle school math teacher. I am currently teaching 6th grade math at a local middle school. I love working with students and have thoroughly enjoyed witnessing them become more confident and successful in school!
My primary tutoring strategy is to focus on building confidence. A confident student is better prepared to learn and is more tolerant of making mistakes and going through the learning process.
Confidence comes from feedback and practice. The more feedback a student receives and the more practice they execute, the more their confidence in their abilities will grow. In addition to providing that important feedback to the student, I also assist parents with learning how to give constructive feedback to the student when they are engaged in homework help. Having the proper communication skills can greatly transform the interaction between parent and student when challenges arise!
Please note - I tutor out of my home in Montclair, VA. Parents are welcome to attend lessons or to drop off/pick up their student. Also, I have pets so please be sure to take that into consideration as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read a little more about me and I look forward to helping you with your tutoring needs! I would love to help with your tutoring needs!

Thanks for the resourcefulness Michelle! Given my son's high functioning autism, it is at times difficult to redirect him from his routines. This often causes him to miss bringing home his Social Studies binder despite several reminders. I truly appreciate your patience and creativity to ensure he is on par with his lessons.
I was very impressed with Michelle. She was able to break the information down in way that my daughter could grasp right away. My daughter even mentioned how much easier it was for her to understand the concepts after the lesson.
I am extremely impressed with the work Michelle is doing with my student and I can tell how much she is improving daily! Thanks Michelle for an excellent job!!!
Michelle is an awesome tutor. She works with my daughter in Geometry. She is very patient and works very well with kids.
Hopefully, I was successful in clicking and saving a 5-star rating for each session to date. I wanted to be sure to post this comment in case any star was missed! Our son is thriving in the supportive, challenging, and nurturing learning environment facilitated by Michelle. Looking forward to continued great sessions that will translate into our son's confidence and success in the classroom. Thank you Michelle!
Michelle began weekly tutoring with my daughter in September. As we finish her first quarter, I am pleased to report that my daughter has her first “A” in math in a very long time! Michelle is very patient and understanding when she does not initially catch-on to a concept. Michelle works very diligently with her and celebrates her successes with her. We definitely recommend Michelle as a tutor, especially if your student is a bit afraid of math and/or finds it intimidating.
In reading Ms. Michelle's bio, we felt good right away as she thinks building a child's confidence is very important before she begins tutoring the subject. Being part of a military family she totally understands what it means to have to move a child in the middle of a school year. Unfortunately, each state has their own education curriculum and a child that moves often may lose bits and pieces of learning along the way. As a parent it is very difficult to see your child trying so hard but not being able to succeed at times. It can hurt their self-esteem.
Ms. Michelle is dedicated to her students. She is truly caring and very patient when it comes to tutoring our child. She makes reading fun!!
After the first lesson, I could see my child wanting to read a book without a frown on her face. She's having fun too!! Isn’t that the best way to teach a child, making it fun and not a chore? Self-confidence has improved drastically!!
Thank you Ms. Michelle!!!!
Michelle is an excellent tutor! She is very patient, friendly, uplifting and extremely dependable. My daughter (5th grade) looks forward to her tutoring sessions with Michelle and she now enjoys learning math! Michelle has had a very positive impact on how my daughter looks at math, and she now has the confidence she previously lacked. She feels confident that she will do well on her math SOL and is looking forward to summer tutoring to prepare for 6th grade. Again, Michelle is an EXCELLENT tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
