About Tina

I am a first grade teacher with experience teaching first, second and third grades. I just finished my 17th year of teaching. I love teaching students to read. I have taught several reading courses in my county and have taken even more! I have a profound love of learning and enjoy passing that along to the children I come into contact with. I love working with children and seeing the joy on their face when things "click".

I have experience teaching 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade math in my 17 year career. I have taken a great deal of math professional development courses that my county has provided.

I am a Nationally Board Certified Teacher in early literacy. I have taken and taught many reading and writing professional development opportunities. I have taught for 17 years and my students make growth each year.

I am very familiar with the PALS assessment here in Virginia which I feel gives me an understanding of how words work.

I use the PALS spelling inventory to help guide my instruction. I use sorts from Words Their Way as well.

I cannot wait to hear from you and help your student grow and become engaged in their own learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I feel I am qualified to teach phonics skills because as a first grade teacher I have given countless PALS assessments. PALS is a phonological assessment given to students to assess their phonemic awareness. I have then taken their data and planned activities based in the assessment results. I feel I would be able to take a writing sample of a child's and assess it for phonemic awareness and then plan individual lessons geared to the child's weak areas.
