I am a retired physician residing here in Virginia for a few months (until Christmas.) I was a teaching assistant as an undergraduate. As a physician I have taught medical and nursing students.
I recognize that people learn in different ways and I like finding the learning style that fits each student. At different times I have struggled with some subjects, and I understand the frustration when it seems like a teacher just says the same thing over and over, but it doesn't make sense. I think sometimes some one-on-one work can help a student get on track with a subject, and it can make a world of difference. I like building students' confidence that they can understand the material.
Math and science often seem like a "foreign language" to students. They can be particularly intimidating subjects for students. I enjoy helping students learn the concepts underlying the subjects rather than just trying to "memorize" material for an exam. I find that this is better foundation, especially for later classes in these subjects. I am a retired physician residing here in Virginia for a few months (until Christmas.) In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
