About Melissa

I have been working with children since the age of thirteen. I have been volunteering with special needs students since sophomore year in high school. My mother was a special education teacher so I would volunteer in her school when I could. I went to Catholic School from 1st to 12th grade and she taught in the public school system, so we had days off that they did not.I worked in New York for five years as a SPED teacher and then decided to move to Virginia in August of 2000. I have taught in Virginia for the last eight and a half years, all in Special Education. I received my Teaching License in September of 2006. I am very proud of that because, as a single mother paying all the bills, it was a difficult but great accomplishment! I am told I have a way with children and I use that to my advantage. I also have a way of breaking down the lessons(modifying)so that a student can understand what I or another teacher, are trying to teach. I try numerous ways of teaching and will try to use projects, visuals,hands-on or anything that will enhance the lesson for comprehension and enjoyment!I have a thearter arts background, enjoy sports, love to sing, dance and write(lyrics, stories and poetry)and finding out about new and old things! I use all of these things to enhance my abilities to teach and reach the students and make them want to learn. It makes me feel great when a student understands what I am trying to teach them, whether it be an educational or life lesson! I also stress to my students that, even I am not too old to learn new things or make mistakes! I always tell them that the worst thing you can do is not take responsibility for your words or actions! It is a life lesson and the only wrong thing you can do is not learn from your mistakes! Everyone makes mistakes, including myself, the object is to not make the same mistake twice! Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
