About Eliott

Hello students!

I can't wait to work with you to become a stronger writer, more fluent reader, or just an all around more focused and actualized scholar. I have began tutoring several years ago as a student job during college, and fell in love with teaching and working with students. I pursued that love toward teaching and received a Masters of Education in Special Education after finishing my undergraduate degree in Creative Writing and Afrikana Studies.

That might seem like a lot of boring stuff, but I did it all because deep down I love learning, and I love watching others grow their own ability to learn and to understand the world. I do much more than teaching and tutoring with my time; I love to write, make short films and animations, draw comics, and in general sink my teeth into any new creative endeavors. If these are interest of yours that you cannot pursue because they aren't readily available, I am able to help with that too!

I have been tutoring and teaching English for over five years, and have worked with students in k-12 age groups during that time. I received a B.A. in Creative Writing from Oberlin College, and as part of my coursework I took part in several writers workshops for genre's ranging from non-fiction and poetry, to comics, flash-fiction, and screenplay. During my undergraduate work, I engaged in several extracurricular projects and activities, including writing, producing, and directing two short films, helping Oberlin middle school students write and produce a short films, and taking first place in the Inaugural Charles Finney Oratorical Speech Competition.

I have taught English to general and special education students for two years at Richmond Public Schools at Fairfield Elementary (k-5), Martin Luther King Middle School (6-8), and Thomas C. Boushall Middle School (6-8). During my time at Richmond Public Schools, I have had poetry published in a VCU poetry magazine and additionally, I have completed two screenplays which are currently on the festival circuit.

This experience has given me both a professional understanding of English and it's use in the workplace, as well as an understanding of the creative use of language and applications in creative fields. I am capable of tutoring students in formal and informal use of language for academic and creative usage.

If you have any questions about my past experience, interests, or aspirations, feel free to ask!

Thanks and take care,

Mr. R.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked for two years as a teacher in the Richmond Public school system as a special education teacher. I completed a masters of education in special education at Virginia Commonwealth University and have regularly worked with students with ADD/ADHD. I have also written individualized education plans and differentiated lesson plans for students with ADD/ADHD and co-morbid disabilities on multiple occasions.

Autism

While completing my masters in education for special education at Virginia Commonwealth University, my coursework included specific information and strategies involving working with students with autism. In the last two years as a special education teacher for Richmond Public Schools, I have worked with students across the autism spectrum in self-contained and collaborative classroom environments. I have also completed individualized education plans and differentiated lesson plans for students across the varying degrees of the autism spectrum.

Cooking

I began working in restaurants as young as nine, due to my parents being professional bakers and chefs. I continued to work in various restaurants into my undergraduate studies. While at Oberlin College, I lived in a student run co-op, and prepared meals as a head chef for 120 students during my shift. I also served as a food safety coordinator, and was food-safe certified in Ohio, which required me to maintain food safety within the kitchen and interface with the health department on a regular basis about sanitary food storage and preparation.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the last two years I have worked in Richmond Public Schools teaching this grade range of students. I have worked in self-contained and collaborative environments at an Elementary school. Additionally, I have received a master's of education in special education from Virginia Commonwealth university and have worked as a tutor through Oberlin College for kindergarten, second, and sixth grade students.

English

My qualifications at a glance:

Currently hold degrees in Creative Writing and Education (Masters)
Work in spare-time as a writer (genre's include poetry, prose, essay, comic, screenplay)
Currently hold teaching license and teach English (General and Exceptional Ed.)

Film

Separate from my own formal academic development, I have directed and produced several short films using a variety of film media, including digital video, 16 millimeter film, direct cinema (painting and etching film), a long with a host of editing and shooting methods. I have worked with middle school children for the Oberlin College film collective and Apollo Outreach initiative as well, bringing my understanding of these techniques and methods to students who produced their own short films.

Lacrosse

I began playing Lacrosse around the age of 10, and I continued to play the game through high school and college until discovering a career ending injury. Over that time I played for the Tri-State All Stars, who boast at least one player on 80% of division 1 school teams. Additionally, I worked with my father to set up and cultivate a Lacrosse culture in our town in southern New Jersey. This often took the the form of running clinics for new players as well as lobbying school districts to start teams for the students in their area.

Phonics

I have received training through coursework in my masters of education program relating specifically to students with difficulty and deficits in phonics, phonemic awareness, and early reading skills. I regularly use words their way and road to reading as remediation and teaching tools for students who have difficulty with phonics as well. As a special education teacher in Richmond Public Schools, this is the primary area I work in as it is an area where a majority of my students have had deficits.

Public Speaking

Prior to my undergraduate studies, I competed in and won several titles as a member of the Mock Trial team at my high school. This involved preparing mock cases and having them play out in a real courtroom, requiring me to speak in front of an actual judge and jury both with scripts and off-the-cuff. During my undergraduate studies, I took first place in the Charles Finney Oratorical competition which was judged by CNN anchor Carol Costello.

Special Needs

I have successfully completed a masters of education in special education, in addition to working for Richmond Public Schools as a special education teacher for two years. My coursework included both how to work with and plan lessons for students with disabilities, as well as how to ensure that special education law at the federal and state level is followed in regards to students with disabilities.

Study Skills

Having completed a masters of education in special education, teaching in public schools, and tutoring in public schools, I have learned I great deal about how to cultivate study skills in students. As a special education teacher, I am often tasked with writing goals for student's individualized education plans, including how to stay organized, how to use graphic organizers to study information, and how to use memory tools such as mnemonic devices.
