I have taught at a public elementary school for 17 years, and preschool for several years before that. My teaching experience includes grades pre-K, K, 2, 3, 4 and 5. I love kids and learning, and enjoy incorporating humor and children's interests into my lessons. I hold a Master of Teaching: Early Childhood from VCU and am a National Board Certified Teacher (Early Childhood Generalist).
Some of my interests other than teaching include travel, pets, theater, art, photography, hiking, swimming, gardening, reading, cooking and visiting museums.
I sometimes struggled in math as a child, and have endless empathy and patience for my students! Some of my most successful math teaching strategies are the use of real-life applications, repeated fact and skill practice (flash cards, drills, etc.), and games.
I love to read, and greatly enjoy sharing literature with my students by reading to them and having them read to me. Equally important is the incorporation of vocabulary instruction, plot and character analysis, and application of literature to one's own life. I use discussion, graphic organizers, and reader's response journals to help students focus and organize their thoughts on what they have read.
I serve as Science Lead Teacher for my school, and as a member of NSTA (National Science Teachers' Association) have attended several conferences and keep up-to-date with their magazine, "Children and Science". The most important thing about teaching and learning science is DOING science, so hands-on investigations are a major part of my science instruction. I also have children keep Science Journals with class notes and drawings, lab results, and written responses to our activities.
Phonics is a crucial part of my classroom instruction, as I have many years of teaching experience in the grades Pre-K, K and 2. "Words Their Way" has been an important resource for word lists, activities and games. I also like to use word families, word building and word searches to emphasize letter sounds and combinations.
I am eager to help your elementary school student stay sharp this summer! Please contact me so we can discuss how to help your child succeed in any subject(s). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a teacher of young children, I teach phonics daily, using oral practice, word families, word searches, and games. A requirement of my masters program was a course in remedial reading which included tutoring children in reading using "Words Their Way." I continue to use many of the strategies and materials from that text.
